Buccaneers Drop Semifinal Game to Bears

BRIDGEWATER, MA -- Friday afternoon, the Buccaneers played Bridgewater State in the MASCAC semifinals. The Bucs, who took an early 2-0 lead in the the first, fell to the Bears 14-7 and will play Salem State in the elimination game on Saturday morning in Bridgewater.

At the Plate

Maritime

  • Alex Schlapak and Chris Perito each had two hits in the game. 
  • Seven other Buccaneers recorded hits in the game. 
  • Schlapak had two RBIs to lead the Bucs.
  • Brett Velzis drove in a run on a solo home run. AJ Pietrafesa and A.J. Luciano both drove in one run.
  • Schlapak had a double for the Bucs.
  • Velzis scored twice in the game, along with Perito.
  • Velzis and Jacob Rogers each drew a walk. 

Bridgewater

  • Scott Emerson and Joey Molis each had three hits in the win. 
  • Molis drove in six runs and was a double away from the cycle. 
  • Jay Wladkowski and Joe Freschette scored three runs apiece.
  • Jonathan O'Donnell had a double for the Bears.
  • Molis hit a triple and a home run.
  • Wladkowski was credited with a stolen base.

How It Happened

Maritime struck first in the top of the first on two erorrs by Bridewater to take a very early 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the frame, the Bears scored three runs, two on a Molis triple and one on a single to score Molis. Bridgewater led 3-2 at the end of one.

In the third, Bridgewater added a run to go up 4-2 on a Molis single up the middle. Bridgewater opened the score up in the fourth scoring eight runs, including two on an O'Donnell double down the left field line. The Bears led the Buccaneers 12-2 after four innings.

Bridgewater extended the lead again in the fifth to 11 runs scoring on a Frechette single.

In the seventh inning, the Bucs started to close the gap on a Schlapak single to center field to make it 13-3.

In the eighth, the Bucs continued to close the gapscoring three runs, one on the Velzis home run over the left field fence. Bridgewater got one of those runs back in the bottom of the frame. The bears led 14-6 going in to the ninth.

Maritime got one more in the top of the ninth with Pietrafesa hitting a sacrifice fly to right to score Velzis. The Bucs left two men on in the inning and fell to the Bears 14-7. 

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers are still alive in the conference tournament and will take on Salem State on Saturday morning at 11am in Bridgewater. The winner of that game plays Bridgewater at 3pm in the conference championship.
