Baseball: Long Balls Help Bucs Sweep Falcons

FITCHBURG, MA -- After taking game one at home on Thursday, the Buccaneers and Falcons played two in Fitchburg on Friday afternoon. The Buccaneers swept the doubleheader, 15-3 and 11-1, to win and sweep the series, their third series win of the conference schedule and their first conference series sweep of the season.

 

GAME ONE

The Basics

At The Plate

Maritime

  • Zach SylviaAidan Henderson, and Frank Aten had three hits each in the game.
  • Alex SchlapakBrett Velzis, and John Tropea all had two hits.
  • AJ Pietrafesa and Tucker Leslie boht had one hit.
  • Velzis, Henderson and Tropea each hit homes runs in the game. It was Velzis's team-leading third home run of the season. 
  • Pietrafesa, Tropea and Aten each had a double to their credit.
  • Velzis drove in five runs, scored three times and walked three times, all to lead the Bucs in the win.
  • Henderson drove in three runs and scored twice.
  • Tropea drove in two runs and scored twice.
  • Sylvia scored three times and drove in a run.

Fitchburg

  • Vincent Eramo had two hits for the Falcons.
  • Zachary Morris had the only other hit.
  • Eramo and Morris were each credited with an RBI.
  • Eramo scored twice with Chris Masta scoring the third run.
  • Eramo had a home run, the only extra-base hit by the Falcons

How It Happened

All of the scoring in game one came in the first three innings of the game. The Bucs opened the scoring with a three-run home run by Velzis. Aten then helped out with a double that scored one. Leslie then reached on a fielding error, one of seven by the Falcons in game one, that scored Aten. The Bucs held a 5-0 lead after the top of the first.

In the second, the Bucs tacked on three more on Henderson's three-run home run, scoring himself, Sylvia and previous home run hitter, Velzis. The Bucs had an 8-0 lead after 1.5 innings. The Falcons scored in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to six runs. They scored two on an error by the Bucs and a Morris single that brought Masta around to score. Maritime led 8-2 after two.

In the third, Maritime went on a seven-run rally, many coming across with two outs. Sylvia drove in one with a single, Pietrafesa drove one in on a double, Velzis and Henderson each drove in runs on singles and Tropea topped it off with a home run scoring himself and Henderson to make it 15-2 Buccaneers. In the bottom of the third frame, Eramo homered to make it 15-3.

From then on, Tinkham and the Falcon's pitchers settled in and the game finished 15-3 in favor of the Bucs.

 

Game Two

Records: Maritime (14-11, 7-2)

              Fitchburg (6-22, 2-7)

  • Brett Velzis and John Tropea were the clubhouse leaders with three hits each. 
  • Zach Sylvia and AJ Pietrafesa had two hits each.
  • Alex Schlapak and Chris Perito each had one hit.
  • Tropea drove in three runs on a three-run home run.
  • Pietrafesa and Velzis each drove in two runs. 
  • Sylvia, Pietrafesa, and Velzis each scored twice. 
  • Sylvia and Velzis each hit two doubles in the game.
  • Tropea added a triple.

Fitchburg

  • Silas Thomas and Liam Goldstein had two hits each.
  • Richard Sharp and Zachary Malek had one hit apiece.
  • Thomas drove in the only Falcon run.
  • Chris Masta scored the run.

How It Happened

The Buccaneers controlled game two from the start. They opened the scoring in the top of the second with a two-run single by Tropea and Perito's three-run home run to take a 5-0 lead.

Maritime added four more runs in the fourth on two singles, a double and a wild pitch. Up 9-0, Dean was cruising on the mound.

In the fifth, Maritime added insurance, scoring two on a Pietrafesa single and a Velzis double to make it 11-0 at the time. In the bottom of the fifth, Fitchburg got on the board on Thomas's single, scoring Masta. 

Dean and the Buccaneers defense held off the Falcons the rest of the way and won the game 11-1 to sweep the series.

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers will host Bridgewater State on Monday in a single, nine-inning conference game at Hendy Field at 1pm.
