How It Happened

It was a scoreless first and top of the second for the teams before the flood gates opened for the Buccaneers. In the bottom of the second the Bucs put up an eight spot with Velzis scoring on a throwing error after leading off the inning, then two runs scored on a Doyle double, Luciano drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Brett Velzis, who hit twice in the inning, hit a grand slam over the right center field wall to put the Bucs up 8-0.

With an eight-run lead, Tinkham was able to settle in and set down the Chargers in the third. In the fourth, Colby-Sawyer cut the Maritime lead to six runs on a Camacho fielder's choice ground out and a Matarese single down the right field line. Up 8-2, the Bucs got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth on a Schlapak single down the left field line that was destined for foul territory and was blown back into fair territory for what can only be named a "Buzzards Bay Single".

Up 9-2 the Bucs sat down the Chargers in the fifth in order and Tinkham's outing was done, leaving with a 9-2 lead.

In the top of the sixth, the Chargers scored their third run on a Brennan ground out to third that scored O'Brien. The Bucs answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame to go up 10-3 on a Pietrafesa triple to score Velzis.

The Bucs did the remainder of the scoring in the game, getting one in the seventh and three in the bottom of the eighth on a Schlapak sacrifice fly and a Houston pinch hit single to left center scoring pinch runner Aidan Weir and Velzis.

Following Tinkham's five innings, Maritime used three other pitchers. First, Jake Dziczkowski tossed an inning with two walks and a strikeout; he also allowed an unearned run. Nick Iannone came in to pitch two innings allowing a hit and a walk while striking out two hitters. Finally, Brendan Baiardi threw a perfect ninth inning allowing no hits, no walks and striking out two.

The Bucs went on to pick up their first win of the season in their home opener, 14-3, over Colby-Sawyer.
