Baseball Splits with Salem in Saturday Doubleheader

SALEM, MA -- After edging out the Vikings on Friday at home, the Bucs and Salem State met in Salem on Saturday for a conference doubleheader to close out the three-game series. Behind a complete game shutout performance on the mound from Brodey Tinkham, the bucs won game one 4-0. In game two, the Bucs held a lead early but were ultimately beaten, 5-1. The Bucs take the series two games to one.

 

Game One 

The Basics

Final: Buccaneers 4, Vikings 0

Records: Maritime (21-13, 13-4)

               Salem (16-17, 7-10)

Maritime

  • Seven different Bucs had hits in the game. Alex Schlapak had a single with two RBI. Zach Sylvia had a single and a run batted in with a walk. Tucker Leslie had a double and an RBI as well as a walk.
  • Brett VelzisFrank AtenA.J. Luciano, and Leslie each scored a run.
  • Sylvia had a stolen base in the game for the Bucs.

Salem

  • The Vikings had six hits in the game, two from Traverse Briana and a double from Brahiam Ortega. 
  • Jack Sefrino and Briana each worked a walk off of Tinkham.
  • Sefrino added a stolen base.

How It Happened

With Tinkham cruising on the mound, the Bucs opened the scoring in the top of the third on a Sylvia single to left that scored Leslie.

In the fourth, Leslie walked with the bases loaded to score Velzis. Later in the inning, Schlapak singled to center to bring in Aten and Luciano.

Tinkham and the Bucs defense held off the Vikings for the final four innings to secure the 4-0 shutout victory.

Maritime

  • Alex Schlapak and Zach Sylvia had three hits each in the game.
  • Michale Doyle added two hits of his own.
  • A.J. Luciano delivered the only RBI. Doyle scored the run.
  • Brett Velzis and Aidan Henderson each drew a walk in the loss.
  • Sylvia and Doyle both had extra base hits. Sylvia with a Double, Doyle with a triple.

Salem

  • Zach Piroh, Tim Catalano, TJ Beninati, and Matt Cesare each had two hits in the game.
  • Beninati drove in two runs in the game. Five different Vikings scored runs.
  • Catalnao, Beninati, and Cesare all had doubles.
  • Jack Sefrino hit a triple as his lone hit.
  • Jake Boucher drew a walk and stole a base in a pinch hitting appearance.

How It Happened

The Buccaneers scored first in game two on a Luciano sacrifice fly to center field to score Doyle after he had tripled. In the bottom of the second, Salem scored two on a Beninati single and a Cesare double, both to center field. The Vikes held a 2-1 lead after two. 

In the bottom of the third, Salem scored two more on a Catalano single and Beninati double to make it 4-1. They would add another run in the bottom of the fourth on a Boucher sacrifice fly to Right that scored Sefrino.

Salem went on to win the game, 5-1, and avoid the conference sweep.

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers will take on Worcester State in their final conference series and games of the regular season next weekend. The series opens with a home game at 5pm on Friday, May 6th.
