Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Gyrenes in Southern Finale

AVE MARIA, FL -- Monday Afternoon, the Buccaneers traveled across the southern tip of Florida to take on NAIA's Ave Maria University. In their final two games of the team's Spring trip, the Bucs dropped both games to the Gyrenes, 9-0 and 7-1.

Game One

The Basics

Maritime

  • The Buccaneers were no hit in the first game of the doubleheader by three Gyrene pitches. 
  • Aidan Henderson was the only Buccaneer to earn a walk. A.J. Luciano reached base by way of an error and Brodey Tinkham was hit by a pitch.

Ave Maria

  • The Gyrenes had nine hits in the game from seven different players. 
  • Seven players scored runs in the win. 
  • Five different players drove in runs for Ave. 
  • Two players hit extra-base hits, both doubles. 

How It Happened

Ave Maria scored seven runs in the first inning of the game with the help of four Maritime errors. Due to the miscues by the visitors, all seven of the runs in the innings were unearned to starting pitcher Brodey Tinkham

Following the first inning, the Buccaneers settled down on the mound and on defense not allowing any Gyrene runs between the second and fifth innings.

In the sixth inning, Ave scored two more runs to make the score 9-0. 

Gyrene pitchers mostly kept Buccaneer hitters of the basepaths and did not allow a hit at all in the game ultimately winning by that same 9-0 score.

At the Plate

Maritime

  • John Tropea tallied two hits in the game, going 2-for-3. 
  • A.J. Luciano hit a double for the Bucs, the only in the game and his second extra-base hit of the season. Luciano also drove in the only Buccaneers run.
  • Brett VelzisAJ Pietrafesa, and Tucker Leslie rounded out the offensive production for Maritime.

Ave Maria

  • The Gyrenes had 10 hits in the game with three players recording two or more hits. 
  • In the win, Ave recorded two extra-base hits, a double and a triple.
  • Five different players drove in runs.
  • Four players stole five bases in the game.

How It Happened

After a quiet two opening innings, the Buccaneers opened the scoring in the third inning on Luciano's double that scored Leslie. Ave Maria answered in the bottom of the fram scoring four runs of their own to take a 4-1 lead after three.

In the fourth, the Gyrenes added another run to make it 5-1 after four innings.

The hosts added to their advantage in the bottom of the fifth on a balm and a ground out to short. 

With the score 7-1, the Buccaneers were unable to get on the board after the third inning and dropped game two of the doubleheader and the final game of their southern trip to Ave Maria.
