Baseball: Bucs Held off by Cougars in Worcester

WORCESTER, MA -- Maritime baseball played their fourth game in three days on Tuesday in Worcester taking on the Clark University Cougars. An early lead, a couple of lead changes and a late inning comeback attempt made this an exciting matchup between the two teams. After nine innings, the Cougars earned their seventh win of the season over the Buccaneers, 10-9.

At The Plate

Maritime

  • A.J. Luciano racked up three hits in the game for the Bucs. Alex Schlapak and Michael Estrada each had two. 
  • Frank Aten and Chris Perito drove in two runs apiece with Schlapak and Estrada each plating one run.
  • Lucian and Aten scored four of the Bucs nine runs, each scoring twice.
  • The Bucs drew two walks in the game, one by AJ Pietrafesa, one by Perito. 
  • Luciano hit a double in the game while Aten went yard, the first of his career.
  • Aten and Brett Velzis each stole a base in teh loss.

Clark

  • Cougar hitters tallied seven hits in the game, three from Samuel Farrell. 
  • Farrell drove in five runs for Clark and Anthony Keefe drove in four. Farrell and Keefe each hit a home run in the game and scored twice.
  • Trevor Ham and Anthony LoCasto each had doubles, their only hits of the game. 
  • Clark hitters drew six walks, two by Ryan Caulfield.

How It Happened

As has been typical of the 2022 Bucs, Maritime scored first in the top of the first, plating two runs on Aten's two-run home run. Clark answered in the bottom of the first, scoring three on a three-run homer by Farrell. Clark held a 3-2 lead after one.

The Buccaneers took over in the middle inning scoring in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. In the top of the third they tied the game at 3-3 on a Clark miscue that scored Aten. In the top of the fourth, Perito drove in two runs with Aidan Henderson and Estrada coming across the plate, giving the Buccaneers a 6-3 lead after 3.5 innings of play. Maritime scored two more in the fifth plating Luciano on an Estrada single to left and on a double steal attempt that saw Velzis come across the plate. 

In the bottom of the fifth, Clark scored four runs on a Ham double, a Farrell single and Keefe's home run that pushed the Cougars ahead of their guests, 10-8.

In the top of the seventh, Maritime scored their ninth run as Estrada reached on an error that brought Luciano into score.

Though the Bucs threatened in the ninth, Clark held the tying run at third and closed out the 10-9 win.

The Buccaneers are back home at Hendy Field on Wednesday to take on Dean College at 3:30pm.
