Henderson Tallies Five Hits in Losses to Lancers

WORCESTER, Mass -- After a 4-3 win over the Lancers at home on Thursday, the Bucs traveled to Worcester to take on the Lancers once again. This time they were not so fortunate, losing both games of the doubleheader, 9-7 and 13-7.

 

Game One

The Basics

  • Alex Sorenti-Burns had three hits in the game for the Lancers.
  • Tyler Smith and Chris Ausiello each had two hits.
  • Tom Halliwell, Anthony Iamarone, Zach Landry, Colin Fitzgerald, and Zack Roberts all had one hit.
  • Smith and Roberts each had a double, Ausiello had a triple. 
  • Ausiello drove in three runs, Fitzgerald drove in two. Smith, Sorenti-Burns, and Iamarone all drove in one run.
  • Sorenti-Burns and Iamarone both stole a base in the win.

How It Happened

The Lancers scored first in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless second, the Buccaneers scored three in the top of the third, one on a walk of Estrada with the bases loaded and two on a Henderson single. The Lancers didn't let the deficit last long as they scored three on a bases loaded triple by Ausiello in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead, 4-3 after three.

The Bucs tied the game in the top of the fourth on a miscue by Worcester. The teams were tied 4-4 after four.

Maritime took the lead again in the sixth as the Bucs offense plated three runs. Logiudice singled to score Perito, Tropea scored on a wild pitch and Logiudice scored on a Sylvia ground out to short. The Bucs led 7-4 after five and a half. The Lancers wouldn't go away as they scored five in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-7 lead. The Worcester pitching shut the Bucs down in the top of the seventh to win game one by the 9-5 score.

               Maritime (20-18, 10-11)

  • Aidan Henderson tallied two hits in the game for the Bucs.
  • Nine other Buccaneers recorded hits in the loss.
  • Henderson had a double, the only extra base hit in the game for Maritime.
  • Six Buccaneers were credited with RBI.

Worcester

  • Tyler Smith, Chris Ausiello, Sean Devin, and Joe Auger each had two hits for the Lancers.
  • Xavier Quezada and Zack Roberts each had one hit. 
  • Smith, Ausiello, Devin and Auger all had doubles.
  • Auger drove in three runs, Roberts drove in two, Smith, Tom Halliwell, and Ausiello all had one RBI.
  • Smith and Devin scored three times, Ausiello and Quezada scored twice, Halliwell, Auger, and Roberts each scored once.
  • Smith stole three bases in the game, Halliwell stole one.

How It Happened

Worcester took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with two of those runs coming on an Auger double. 

In the top of the third, the Buccaneers scored three making the score 4-3. Henderson singled in Zach SylviaJohn Tropea singled, scoring Brett Velzis, and Henderson came in to score on a passed ball. The Lancers extended the lead in the bottom of the inning plating five. Two came in on a Roberts single. The Lancers led 9-3 after three.

Maritime got one back in the top of the fourth on a Sylvia sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the frame, Auger hit a sacrifice fly that scored two, one on the sac fly, the other on a Maritime error. Worcester led 11-4 after four.

Worcester got two more runs in the game and the Bucs scored one in the fifth, sixth, and seventh but couldn't get the game back to even losing game two, 13-9.

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers will be the five seed in the MASCAC Playoffs and will take on Worcester State again on Thursday at Framingham State. Game time is still to be announced.
