Bucs Hit Five Home Runs in Win over Trailblazers

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers opened a weekend conference series with MCLA on Friday at Hendy Field. The Buccaneers bats came alive as they hit five home runs in a big 16-6 win over the Blazers.

At The Plate

Maritime

  • Brett Velzis and Chris Perito both went 3-for-4 at the plate in the win. Velzis hit two home runs and Perito hit his first of the season.
  • Zach SylviaMicahel LogiudiceJohn TropeaAidan Henderson, and Hunter Dean all had two hits.
  • AJ Pietrafesa and Frank Aten each added one hit. 
  • Along with Velzis and Perito, Silvia and Henderson each hit a home run. Dean had a double to round out the extra base hits for the Bucs.
  • Dean drove in four runs in the game. Sylvia, Velzis, Tropea, and Pietrafesa all drove in two. Logiudice, Henderson and Perito all drove in one run.
  • Velzis scored four times, Tropea scored thrice, Sylvia, Henderson and Perito all scored twice, and Logiudice, Pietrafesa, and Aten all scored once.
  • Sylvia and Tropea each stole a base.

MCLA

  • Austin Rachiele had three hits in the loss including a home run.
  • Noel Medina had two hits in the game with Jayco Pena, Ty Mazzeo, and William Walsh each recording one hit.
  • Mazzeo hit a double and Peno had a triple for the Blazers extra base hits.
  • Pena drove in two runs. Rachiele, Randy Adams, Medina and Mazzeo all drove in one run.
  • Rachiele scored twice, Adams, Medina, Pena, and Walsh all came in to score once.
  • Clarence Givhans was credited with a stolen base.

How It Happened

The Buccaneers came out hot, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first. Sylvia scored the first run on a passed ball, Tropea drove in two runs on a single scoring Logiudice and Velzis. Dean followed that up with a two RBI double to left, scoring Henerson and Tropea. Later in the inning, Sylvia reached on a fielder's choice that scored Aten to make it 6-0.

Maritime added a seventh run in the bottom of the second on Velzis's first homer of the day to make it 7-0 after two innings of play.

In the top of the third, the Trailblazers came storming back for five runs. Walsh scored one an Adams fielder's choice, Rachiele scored on a Medina infield single, Pena tripled to bring in Medina and Adams and Mazzeo doubled to score Pena making it 7-5 Bucs going to the Bottom of the third. In the bottom of the third frame, the Bucs got back-to-back dingers from Perito and Sylvia to open their lead back to four runs, 9-5 after three.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Bucs got another home run and another run from Henderson to make it 10-5. 

Velzis homered again in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 11-5.

In the bottom of the sixth, Logiudice singled to right to bring in Perito to score making it 11-5. 

In the top of the seventh, Rachiele homered to left center to add a run for the Trailblazers and they trailed 12-6. In the bottom of the seventh, Dean singled to left bringing in Pietrafesa and Tropea to score making the score 14-6 Buccaneers.

Maritime added two more runs in the eighth on a Pietrafesa single to right center scoring Tropea and Velzis to make it 16-6. 

The bucs sat down MCLA in the top of the ninth and were victorious in game one of their MASCAC series with MCLA, 16-6.

Maritime and MCLA meet again on Saturday at 1 & 4 in North Adams, Ma to close out their conference series.
