Baseball Sweeps Rivier in Sunday Matinee

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Buccaneers baseball hosted Rivier on Sunday in a non-conference doubleheader at Hendy Field. Looking to get back in the win column after a midweek loss, the Bucs did just that, sweeping the Raiders 9-3 and 11-5 improving to 9-5 on the season. Brett Velzis had a hit in each game to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

 

Game One

How it Happened

Maritime scored first in the bottom of the first on a Pietrafesa ground out to shortstop that plated Sylvia giving the Bucs a 1-0 lead after one.

In the top of the second, Bourdreau singled to left to score White to tie the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the frame, Sylvia reached on a fielder's choice, Perito and Houston scored on an erro to give the Bucs a two-run lead, 3-1.

The scoring kept coming from both sides as the Raider scored again in the top of the third to make it 3-2 Bucs. In the bottom of the third, Velzis homered to right center to make it 4-2 Bucs after three.

The Raiders kept answering, scoring another run in the fourth on an Aliberti ground out to third to bring in Medlock to pull within one, 4-3. The bottom of the fourth was the big inning for the Buccaneers; they plated five runs including two on a Tropea single through the middle. Maritime led 9-3 after four.

Tinkham and the Bucs retired the Raiders the rest of the way without any more damage done to pick up the 9-3 win in game one of the doubleheader.

  • Dylan Aliberti had two hits in the loss for the Raiders.
  • Six other hitters had a hit for Rivier.
  • Frank Gulezian drove in two runs on a two-run home run, the only extra base hit for the Raiders.
  • Aliberti, Zachary White, and Thomas Kluntz each drove in one run.
  • Five different Raiders scored runs.
  • Aliberti, Owen MAdlock, and Jacob Boudreau all stole a base.

How It Happened

Rivier struck first in game two on a white single scoring Aliberti. In the bottom of the first, the Bucs had runners on first and third; Sylvia stole home with a run down between first and second to tie the game at 1-1. Henderson proceeded to single down the right field line to score Velzis to give the Bucs a 2-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the second, the Bucs added a third run on a Weir sacrifice fly to right field bringing in Houston to score.

Maritime extended their lead in the bottom of the third on a single to right center by Kutcher that brought in Estrada and Tropea to score. The Bucs led 5-1 after three.

In the bottom of the fourth, Pietrafesa reached on a fielder's choice with Weir at third and he came in to score easily to make the score 6-1.

In the top of the fifth, Gulezian homered to right center to score two runs and cut the Bucs lead in half, 6-3. Maritime got the two runs and then some in the bottom of the fifth on a Houston triple to right field that scored two and because of a throwing error trying to cut down Houston at third, he came in to score to make it 9-3 Buccaneers. Sylvia then scored on a wild pitch and Pietrafesa hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Weir. The Bucs led 11-3 after five.

In the sixth, Rivier scored two on singles by Kluntz and Aliberti to make it 11-5.

Sam Huffman came in in relief of Brown and shut down any more scoring by the Raiders to secure the 11-5 win in game two.

Maritime is back home on Tuesday to take on Eastern Nazarene at 4pm.
