Buc Ball Drops Season Series to Bridgewater

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass --  The Buccaneers hosted Bridgewater State on Tuesday in a conference doubleheader to close out their conference series at Hendy Field. The Bucs dropped both games to the Bears 6-2 and 9-6.

 

Game One

The Basics

  • Scott Emerson and Cam James both had two hits.
  • Joshua Selander and Kevin Lindsay each had one hit.
  • James and Selander drove in two runs apiece.
  • Emerson and Lindsay drove in one run each.
  • Six different Bears scored in the win.
  • Emerson stole two bases, Lindsay stole one.

How It Happened

After two scoreless innings, the Bears broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third when James singled to drive in two runs.

In the bottom of the fourth, Velzis cut the Bridgewater lead in half with a solo home run to center field.

Bridgewater opened their lead in the top of the sixth scoring four runs. Selander singled through the left side to drive in two runs, Lindsay reached on an error on a squeeze play bringing in a run, and Emerson singled to bring in another. The Bears led 6-1 after five and a half. In the bottom of the sixth, Maritime scored a second run on a sacrifice fly by Tropea that brought Logiudice in to score.

Handrahan came out for the ninth and completed his four hit shutout to get the win for the Bears, 6-2, in game one.

At The Plate

Maritime

  • Brett Velzis recorded another multi-hit game in game two with three hits. 
  • John Tropea and Michael Logiudice both had two hits, including a double by Tropea for the only extra-base hit of the game by the Bucs.
  • Aidan HendersonColin LandryAJ Pietrafesa, and Frank Aten all recorded one hit.
  • Velzis drove in two runs in the game. Henderson, Landry and Pietrafesa all drove in one.
  • Tropea scored three times, Logiudice scored twice and Velzis scored once.
  • Aten recorded a stolen base in the loss.

Bridgewater

  • Cam James and Kevin Lindsay had three-hit games in the Bears win.
  • Scott Emerson and Nolan DeAndrade each had two hits including two home runs for DeAndrade, a grand slam and a solo homer.
  • Jay Wladkowski and Joshua Selander both had one hit.
  • James had two doubles in the game and Wladkowski hit a triple.
  • DeAndrade drove in five runs, Wladkowski drove in two and James brought in one.
  • Emerson and DeAndrade each scored twice and four other players scored once.
  • Emerson, James, and Lindsay all had a stolen base in the game.

How It Happened

Like game one, the first two innings of game two were scoreless. In the top of the third, Bridgewater scored first again, bringing in a run on an error by the Bucs to make it 1-0. In the bottom of the frame, the Buccaneers scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead. Velzis singled to score Tropea, Landry singled scoring Logiudice, and Pietrafesa hit an infield single to bring home Velzis.

In the bottom of the fourth, Maritime added some insurance taking advantage of a Bears wild pitch that plated Tropea to make the score 4-1 after four innings.

The Bears struck back in the top of the fifth scoring seven runs. The first four scored on DeAndrade's grand slam to right center field. Two more runs came in on Wladkowski's triple to left center and the seventh run of the inning came in on a James double to center to make the score 7-4 Bridgewater.

DeAndrade added another run in the sixth on his second homer of the game, a solo home run over the center field fence. The Bears led 9-4 at that point. In the bottom of the sixth, Maritime scored twice with a run coming in on a Velzis single and then on a Henderson single on the infield to pull the Bucs within three, 9-6, after six.

Brenden Baiardi held the Bears in the top of the seventh inning and in the bottom of the seventh the Bears closer, Dasilva-Medeiros struck out two hitters and walked another but got out of the inning to record the save and secure the win for the Bears, 9-6, sweeping the season series.
