Baseball Splits with Hornets

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Baseball hosted NVU-Lyndon on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader. In game one, the Bucs scored in the bottom of the first but were outscored 7-0 the rest of the way, dropping game one, 7-2. In game two, John Tropea had a stellar game at the plate helping the Bucs to a 15-7 win.

Game One

At The Plate

Maritime

  • Zach Sylvia posted a two-hit game in the game one loss.
  • Frank AtenBrett VelzisJohn Tropea, and Chris Perito each had a hit in the game. 
  • Aten's hit was a double and Velzis' was a triple, the only two extra base hits of the game for the Bucs.
  • Velzis and AJ Pietrafesa each drove in a run.
  • Sylvia and Velzis scored the runs. 
  • Sylvia also recorded a stolen base.

NVU-Lyndon

  • Matt Doherty recorded two hits in the win.
  • TJ Santaw, Dylan Wilson, and Will Perkins each had one hit.
  • Perkins' lone hit was a three-RBI triple and Santaw's was a double. 
  • Wilson and Doherty each drove in one run.
  • Tyler Murro scored twice and five other players came in to score for the Hornets.
  • Mark Osorio recorded the only stolen base of the game for Lyndon.

 

How It Happened

Maritime scored first in the bottom of the first plating two runs on a Velzis triple to score Sylvia and a Pietrafesa ground out to shortstop that scored Velzis from third. 

Scoreless through the early innings, the Hornets scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning. The first came on a Wilson single to center. The second came on an error by the Bucs allowing Murrow to score. Perkins then tripled home three runs and another run scored on a second error by the Bucs in the inning. Lyndon led the Bucs 6-2 after three and a half innings of play.

The Bucs were held at bay the remainder of the game and the Hornets scored one more in the top of the seventh on a Doherty single that scored Murro for the second time in the game. 

The Hornets went on to win game one by a final score of 7-2.

At The Plate

Maritime

  • John Tropea hit his stride in this game going 4-for-5 at the plate with five RBI and four runs scored. He posted three singles and a triple.
  • Aidan Henderson recorded a two-hit game for the Bucs in the win with a double.
  • Brett Velzis had just one hit though it was his first home run of the season.
  • Tucker Leslie and Jake Houston both had one hit in the game.
  • Henderson drove in two runs and Velzis, Leslie, Hunter Dean, and Conor Coulter all drove in one.
  • Velzis scored three times in the game as he reached two other times by way of the free pass.
  • Henderson and Michael Estrada each scored twice in the win and Leslie and Houston each scored once. 
  • Tropea and Dean each stole two bases in the game. Coulter picked up his first career stolen base as well.

NVU-Lyndon

  • Oscar Peredes had a two-hit game for the Hornets. Five other players recorded a hit.
  • Paredes drove in three runs and Steven Friscia drove in two. 
  • Paredes hit a home run and Tyler Murro hit a double for the two extra-base hits in the loss for the Hornets.

 

How It Happened

The Bucs opened the game with three runs in the bottom of the first with two on a Tropea single to center and one scoring on Henderson's double to left.

Up 3-0 through two and a half, the Bucs tacked on six more in the third. Two came in to score on Tropea's triple; Tropea then scored on a Henderson single. Hornets pitching balked a run home and Velzis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score another. 

Down 9-0 after three innings, the Hornets scored six in the top of the fourth. Of the six runs, two came in to score on a Frischia single to right and two more scored on Paredes' home run to right. The Bucs didn't let the runs go unanswered in the bottom of the frame with Tropea scoring on a passed ball to put the Bucs up by four, 10-6, after four.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Bucs scored four more runs to take a 14-6 lead. Tropea singled to score Houston, Dean reached on a fielding error by the right fielder that scored two and Coulter drove in a run on a ground out to the pitcher.

Paredes scored one more for the Hornets in the top of the sixth on a single to center to score Frischia to make it 14-7. In the bottom of the sixth, Velzis hit his first home run of the season to make it 15-7.

In the top of the seventh, Jake Dziczkowski shut down the Hornets and secured the 15-7 win in game two and split of the double header.

 

What's Next

The Bucs are on the road for their next game on Tuesday, March 21st at Dean College for a single game beginning at 3:30pm.
