Bucs Sweep Chargers in Home Opener

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Sunday afternoon, the Buccaneers baseball team hosted Colby-Sawyer in their home opener. Game one went down to the wire with the Bucs winning 2-1 and game two was all Maritime in the late innings after being no hit for 3+ as they took the win 4-0.

Game One

At The Plate

Maritime

  • Tucker Leslie recorded a multi-hit fame going 2-for-3 at the plate. 
  • Frank AtenBrett VelzisJohn Tropea, and Micahel Estrada each had a hit.
  • Estrada was credited with one RBI
  • Zach Sylvia and Tropea scored the two runs in the win. 
  • Leslie recorded the lone stolen base in the game.

Colby-Sawyer

  • Jake Choiniere and Cooper O'Brien each had two hits in the loss. 
  • Zach Rogers, Bailey Camacho, and Devin Montalvo all recorded a hit.
  • Montalvo's hit was a double, the only extra base hit in the game and he drove in the Chargers only run.
  • Jack Matarese scored the run in the game for CSC.

 

How It Happened

Starting pitcher Justin Brown kept the Chargers off the board in the top of the first and in the bottom of the inning Velzis reached on a fielder's choice. On that play, Mullen was charged with an error overthrowing the second baseman which allowed Sylvia to score. 

Maritime held their 1-0 advantage until the top of the fourth when Montalvo doubled in Matarese to tie the game at 1-1. 

Brown's day was done and Huffman took over on the mound and kept the Chargers at bay allowing the Bucs to break the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth. Estrada singled to right field with Tropea on third and he came in to give Maritime the 2-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Baiardi entered the game and struck out two hitters on his way to his first save of the season and the Bucs first win of the season.

At The Plate

Maritime

  • Tucker Leslie picked up his third hit of the day in game two and drove in two runs.
  • Zach Sylvia and Frank Aten each had a hit.
  • Brett Velzis scored twice, Aten and AJ Pietrafesa each scored once.
  • Leslie stole his second base of the day, the only one for the Bucs in game two.

Colby-Sawyer

  • Ben Brennan, Cooper O'Brien and Griffin Wheeler recorded the hits for the Chargers in the loss.
  • O'Brien recorded a stolen base in the game.

How It Happened

A pitchers duel ensued in game two with Tinkham and Rogers going toe-to-toe. Tinkham allowed three hits, Rogers allowed one and no-hit the Bucs through 3 innings. 

In the bottom of the fourth, the Buccaneers broke the scoreless tie when Rogers tried to pick off a runner at first and threw it away. Velzis and Aten came in to score to give Maritime a 2-0 lead.

In the sixth, Leslie singled to right center to drive in Pietrafesa and Velzis giving the Bucs a 4-0 advantage.

Tinkham came out for the seventh and shut down the Chargers, striking out two hitters.

The Bucs will host Curry College on Tuesday, March 7th at 4pm at Commodore Hendy Field.
