Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader with Blazers Sweeping Conference Series

NORTH ADAMS, Mass -- The Buccaneers were on the road Saturday to take on MCLA in a conference doubleheader to round out their three-game conference series with the Trailblazers. They made the trip well worth it with a 7-6 win in game one and a 10-0 shutout in game two to sweep the series.

 

Game one

  • Zach Sylvia went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Bucs with two doubles and a triple.
  • John Tropea had two hits in the game.
  • Micahael LogiudiceAJ PietrafesaFrank AtenAidan Henderson, and Colin Landry each had one hit in the win.
  • Henderson's lone hit was a double.
  • Sylvia and Landry each drove in two runs.
  • Logiudice, Brett Velzis, and Aten all drove in one run.
  • Sylvia scored twice, Tropea, Pietrafesa, Aten, Henderson, and Landry all scored once.
  • Velzis and Tropea had stolen bases in the game.

MCLA

  • Clarence Givhans and Ty Mazzeo both had two hits in the loss.
  • Seven other Trailblazers recorded hits in the game.
  • Randy Adams, Rob Correia, and Aidan Brett all had doubles, Givhans recorded a triple and Austin Rachiele hit a home run.
  • Adams drove in two runs, Rachiele, Correia, and Brett drove in one each.
  • Mazzeo scored twice, Rachiele, Givhans, Jayco Pena, and William Walsh all scored once.
  • Mazzeo stole two bags for MCLA.

How It Happened

The Bucs got on the board first in the top of the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Sylvia that scored Henderson. In the bottom of the second, MCLA tied the game 1-1 on a Correia double to score Pena.

In the top of the third, Aten singled to left scoring Tropea and Landry singled to left to bring in Aten and Pietrafesa to score making it 4-1 Maritime. MCLA answered right back in the bottom of the inning getting a run on an Adams ground out that saw Givhans cross the plate.

Continuing the back and forth scoring, the Buccaneers scored again in the top of the fourth on a Velzis sacrifice fly bringing in Sylvia to score to put the Bucs back up by three runs, 5-2. In the bottom of the fram, MCLA scored on a double steal as Mazzeo crossed with Hamel being picked off at first.

MCLA held the Bucs off the board in the fifth and scored in their offensive frame on an Adams double to score Walsh. The Bucs still led 5-4 after five innings.

In the top of the sixth, Logiudice singled to left to bring in Sylvia to score, giving the Bucs a 6-4 advantage. The Trailblazers countered with a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth on Brett's double to score Mazzeo. MCLA trailed the Buccaneers after six, 6-5. 

In the top of the final inning, Sylvia doubled to bring home Landry and give Maritime a two-run, 7-5 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Baiardi gave up a home run to Rachiele and proceeded to retire the side with no more damage done to get the Bucs the 7-6 win in game one of the conference doubleheader.

  • Randy Adams had two of the three Trailblazers hits in the loss. Michael Wormuth had the third hit.
  • Adams hit a double for the only extra base hit of the game for MCLA.

 

How It Happened

It was all Buccaneers in this one with the bats hot and Dean lights out on the mound allowing just three hits and three walks in the win. The Bucs scored their first three runs in the top of the first. The first run came on a Henderson single, the second on a Landry sacrifice fly and the third on an MCLA error that allowed Henderson to come across to make it 3-0 Bucs.

Maritime added one in the third when Hefner reached on an error and Henderson came in to score again to make it 4-0 Buccaneers.

The Bucs opened the game to 9-0 in the fifth bringing in four runs. Tropea doubled to bring in two, Logiudice singled to bring in another, and Velzis reached on a fielder's choice that brought in Tropea for their fourth of the inning and the guests led 9-0.

In the top of the seventh, Maritime added one more on a Pietrafesa single that brought in Logiudice making it 10-0. Dean finished off the game in the bottom of the seventh and the Bucs left North Adams with a doubleheader sweep and conference series sweep of the Trailblazers.

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers will host Bridgewater State in a conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 25th at Hendy Field beginning at 4pm.
