Softball Sweeps Salem State to Secure Playoff Spot

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- On senior day for Abby Pope, the Buccaneers made history at Rollins field sweeping Salem State 6-4 and 14-5. With the win they sweep a conference series for the first time in program history and have made the playoffs for the first time in program history. Ab'c'de Patane also hit her sixth home run of the season breaking the program record for home runs as a freshman.

  • Payton Jeffers led the way with three hits for the Vikings.
  • Rebecca Walker, Janae Santos, and Allison Frost all had two hits.

How It Happened

Salem took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with Walker scoring on a Rodriguez ground out to second base. The Buccaneers answered in the bottom of the frame with three runs in the inning. Patane doubled to left driving in Kerecz, Donlan singled to center field to bring home Burton, and Butler singled up the middle driving in Patane to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead after one.

Neither team scored in the second, third, or fourth and in the fifth, Walker hit an inside the park home run to right center scoring herself and Frost to tie the game at 3-3. Rodriguez singled to bring in Jeffers giving the Vikings a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Donlan grounded out to shortstop and Lane scored from third to tie the game at 4-4. 

In the bottom of the sixth, Burton reached on an error by the Vikings and Klemp and Biondo scored to give the Bucs a 6-4 lead.

Klemp allowed runners to get one first and third in the top of the seventh but closed out the game one victory for the Bucs, getting Salem to ground into a double play and the Bucs won 6-4.

  • Isabella Perrotti added one hit for the Vikings.
  • Rodriguez drove in two runs; Walker, Payton Jeffers, and Dawn Eisnor each drove in one run.
  • Frost scored twice, Walker, Janae Santos, and Perrotti all scored once.

How It Happened

Maritime opened the scoring in the bottom of the first scoring three runs. Burton tripled to score Kerecz, Booker racher on an error that scored Burton, and Donlan singled to bring in Booker giving the Bucs a 3-0 lead after one inning.

The Bucs extended their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the second with a run coming in on a Booker ground out and another on a Patane single.

In the top of the third, Salem scored three runs with two coming in on two separate sacrifice flies and another on a Rodriguez single to make the score 5-3.

Salem held the Bucs in the third and tied the game in the top of the fourth at 5-5. Walker and Rodriguez singled to each drive in a run. In the bottom of the fourth, Maritime retook the lead on a Donlan triple that plated Patane and then on a sacrifice fly from Butler that brought Donlan in from third. Maritime led 7-5 after four.

The Bucs extended their lead to 10-5 in the bottom of the fifth with runs scoring on a Burton single, a Booker double and a Butler single to give the Buccaneers a five-run lead after five. 

Needing three runs in the bottom of the sixth, after holding Salem in the top of the inning, to end the game on run rule, Burton singled down the left field line to drive in Kerecz and Patane followed that up with her sixth home run of the season, walking the Bucs off with her three run shots, 14-5, to sweep the doubleheader and secure a spot in the MASCAC playoffs.

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers are on the road on Saturday to take on Worcester State in their final regular season conference doubleheader before the playoffs begin on May 10th.
