Bucs Stung by Hornets on Opening Day

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Buccaneers softball team opened their season on Friday in Myrtle Beach with a pair of games against NVU-Lyndon at the North Myrtle Beach Sport Complex. With seven freshman making their Maritime softball debuts in game one and the team finding the bats in game two, the Bucs dropped the pair of games to the Hornets 12-6 in game one and 12-9 in game two.

  • Freshman Kelsey Booker posted a two-hit game in her Buccaneers debut with a double and an RBI. 
  • Senior Captain Abby Pope, and freshman Grace Biondo each had a hit. 
  • Ab'c'de Patane and Erin Donlan each had a RBI in the game. 
  • Pope and Jennamarie Klemp each recorded a stolen base in the loss.

NVU-Lyndon

  • Amber Everett and Blake Southworth each had two-hit games for the Hornets.
  • Victoria Valentine, Seairra Anderson, Bailey Quire, Adriana Lemieux, Audrey Tembruell, and Seleena Porter all had a hit in the win.
  • Valentine and Anderson each had doubles. Southworth and Tembruell each had a triple.
  • Valentine Quire, Lemieux and Tembruell all had two-RBI games. Anderson added a RBI as well.

 

How It Happened

The Hornets took advantage of the young Bucs in the top of the first inning tacking on six runs to take a big lead early. Valentine walked with the bases loaded to drive in the first run of the game. Anderson followed that with a bases loaded walk of her own to make it 2-0. Anderson singled to drive in Southworth followed by Lemieux reaching on a fielder's hoice to bring in another run and make it 4-0. Tembruell tripled later in the inning to bring in two more and make it 6-0. 

In the bottom of the first, Booker singled to drive in Pope to cut the Hornets lead to five runs, 6-1.

After a scoreless second, Lemieux drove in her second run of the game on a ground out to second based to reopen the lead to six runs, 7-1. 

In the bottom of the third, the Bucs answered again on a fielder's choice from Grace Biondo that scored Reagan Kerecz

The Bucs held the Hornets in the fourth and scored another run in the bottom of the frame on a wild pitch that scored Patane. 

Lyndon went on a two-inning scoring run that brought in one run in the fifth to make it 8-3. They followed that up with a three-run sixth scoring runs on a Porter single, and two wild pitches. 

Down 11-3 in the sixth, facing the eight-run run rule, the Bucs scored two runs to keep the game alive. The first on a wild pitch that scored Patane and the second on a Donlan ground out to second that scored Carleen Harring

The Hornets scored one in the top of the seventh to make it 12-5. Maritime scored one run in the bottom of the seventh on a Patane ground out that brought in Ashley Haller to score. 

Though the Bucs got within six, they couldn't recover from the big first inning, dropping the season opener 12-6 to the Hornets.

  • Ann Watkins recorded a three-hit game for the Hornets.
  • Blake Southworth, Claudia Knapp, Riann Fortin each had two hits. 
  • Amber Everett, Saleena Porter and Adriana Lemieux each had one hit in the win.
  • Fortin and Watkins each had doubles in the game. Southworth recorded a triple.
  • Fortin drove in five runs in the game. Southworth drove in two. Anderson, Lemieux and Watkins each drove in one run.

How It Happened

The Bucs and Hornets played to a scoreless tie in the first two and a half innings of the game before the Hornets broke the scoreless draw with two runs on a Fortin single that scored Porter and Knapp.

In the top of the fourth, the Bucs tied the game with two runs of their own. The first came on a Patane double that scored Booker who reached base on a double of her own. Klemp singled to right to score Patane to make it 2-2.

Maritime took a big lead in the top of the fifth as they plated five runs. Booker reached on a fielder's choice that scored Pope. Burton reached on a fielder's choice that brought in Booker and Patane to score. Harring and Ostromecki both singled that brought in Burton and Klemp to score to make it 7-2. In the bottom of the frame, the Hornets erased the five-run deficit and went up two runs ad they brought in seven runs. Anderson singled scoring Tembruell. Fortin doubles to bring in three runs with the bases loaded. Lemieux singled to bring in Fortin. Watkins doubled down the right field line to score Lemieux, and Everett reached on an error that scored Watkins. 

Now down two runs, the Bucs scored on of their own to make it 9-8. Donlan singled to bring in Pope. In the bottom of the sixth, Southworth tripled to bring in two runs and then scored on a wild pitch to make the score 12-8. 

In the top of the seventh, the Bucs struck, scoring one run on a Donlan single that scored Ostromecki. Unable to get any more runs, the Bucs fell 12-9 in game two.

What's Next

Maritime are back on the field at North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex on Saturday with two games against Howard Community College at 12pm and then against Catawba at 2pm.
