Softball Swept by Owls on the Road

WESTFIELD, Mass -- Softball traveled to Westfield on Friday afternoon to take on the Owls in a conference doubleheader. The Bucs battled but couldn't hold off the Owls losing in game one 8-6 and 12-4 in six innings in game two.

Game One

The Basics

  • Kelsey Booker recorded three hits in the loss including a double.
  • Reagan Kerecz, Ab'c'de Patane and Rubi Butler each had two hits.
  • Erin Donlan, and Hannah Burton each had one hit.
  • Donlan and Patane both had a double to their credit.
  • Booker drove in three runs in the loss. Patane, Butler, and Burton all drove in one.
  • Donlan scored twice; Kerecz, Booker, Patane, and Abby Pope each scored once.
  • Butler and Pope both stole a base.

Westfield

  • Jordyn Lummus led all players with four hits.
  • Mia Alfonso recorded three hits in the win.
  • Abby Higgins, Sarah Bingham, and Christina Ciampa all had two hits.
  • Alyssa Clark tallied one hit.
  • Higgins and Bingham each had a double.
  • Alfonso drove in three runs for the Owls; Clark and Ciampa drove in two. Bingham added one RBI.
  • Higgins scored three times, Lummus and Clark scored twice, Bingham scored once.

How It Happened

It was all Owls early as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the bottom of the third to take a 5-0 lead after three innings of play.

In the top of the fourth, the Buccaneers got on the board with three runs of their own. Patane singled to score Donlan, Butler singled to score Booker, and Burton singled to bring in Patane. In the bottom of the fourth, Westfield scored three runs with two coming in on an Alfonso single and the third on a Ciampa single, making it 8-3 after four.

The Bucs got one back in the top of the fifth to make it 8-4 on a Booker single to bring in Pope. Booker struck again in the seventh with a two-run double that plated Donlan and Kerecz. The Buccaneers couldn't complete the comeback losing game one 8-6.

At the Plate

  • Ab'c'de Patane was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in game two with two singles and a double.
  • Reagan KereczKelsey BookerHannah Burton, and Carleen Harring all had one hit. Burton's hit was a double.
  • Patane drove in two runs in the loss with Burton and Harring each bringing in one.
  • Grace Biondo, Booker, Patane, and Burton each scored once.
  • Patane stole the only base of the game for either team.

Westfield

  • Jordyn Lummus and Sarah Hough both had three hits in the game.
  • Abby Higgins, Christina Ciampa, and Meredith Higgins all had two hits. Both of Ciampa's hits were for extra bases with a double and a home run to her credit. 
  • Sarah Bingham, Mia Alfonso, and Megan Metzger all had one hit.
  • Bingham and Higgins both had a double in the win.
  • Ciampa drove in two runs, and seven other players were credited with one RBI.
  • Lummus, Hough and Ciampa all scored twice with six other Owls scoring once.

How It Happened

The Owls scored in the bottom of the first on a Lummus single and they doubled their lead in the bottom of the second on Ciampa's home run. Westfield led the Bucs 2-0 after two. 

Donlan kept the Owls off the board in the third allowing the Bucs offense to erase the shutout in the top of the fourth. Burton doubled to center bringing in Patane to score and Harring singled to score Burton in the inning. The Bucs had erased the Owls lead, tying the game at 2-2. In the bottom of the fourth, Westfield retook the lead scoring three runs. Two runs came in on a Hough single and another on a Higgins single. The OWls led the Bucs 5-2 after four.

After blanking the Buccaneers in the fifth, the Owls scored in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead to four runs, 6-2, on a steal of home by Ciampa.

In the top of the sixth, Patane singled to right to score Biondo and cut the deficit in half, 6-3, after five and a half. In the bottom of the sixth, Westfield put the game to rest scoring six runs to end the game by run rule, 12-4, securing the sweep of the Bucs.

 

What's Next

The Bucs will be back in conference play next Saturday, April 15th, against Fitchburg State at Rollins field with first pitch at 12pm.
