Buccaneers Softball: 2023 Preview

The Buccaneers softball team, who finished eighth in the conference standings in 2022, are gearing up for their 2023 campaign under fourth-year head coach Will Griffiths.

The Bucs in 2022 had an eventful season with a number of highs and lows. Though they failed to win a conference game last season the team did post seven non-conference wins including a 34-0 win over Fisher College which was the most runs scored by a Bucs softball team in program history; They swept Bay Path with a 5-3 win and a 9-8 10th inning walk off win and took down NVU-Johnson in South Carolina, 7-4, in their southern swing to begin the season.

Statistically, for this season's returners, Maia Ostromecki posted a .310 batting average with a team-high seven doubles on 26 hits with 14 RBI. Now a senior and captain, Abby Pope batter .263 with two doubles, a triple and a program singe-season record 15 stolen bases.

In 2023, the team returns anywhere from 3-5 players including senior captains Carleen Harring and Abby Pope as well as Ostromecki. There are 11 freshman and two transfers on the roster as well.

The schedule for the Buccaneers consists of 38 games and four exhibition games. The team will begin their season in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on February 24th with a double headers against NVU-Lyndon. They will take on Howard Community College on the 25th and end their southern trip with games against Albion and NVU-Lyndon on the 26th.

When the team returns north, they will face off against Central Maine Community College in an exhibition doubleheaders on March 5th before they play again for real on the 11th against NVU-Johnson. The Schedule features some competition that the Bucs had against the ropes in 2022 with the likes of Curry College and Regis College coming to Buzzards Bay for double headers.

The conference schedule begins for Griff's crew on April 1st against Framingham State at home. Their first road conference double header comes ahead of Eastern Weekend against Westfield State. The team's final home regular season games will take place on April 29th before they close out their regular season on the road against Worcester State on May 6th.

"We're young and capable this season with a good mix of good young players and top notch leadership from the upper classmen," said head coach Will Griffiths. "We are all looking forward to this season and know that we can turn some heads along the way."
