Softball Win Streak Ends at Eight in Split with Curry

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Maritime softball hosted Curry College on Wednesday riding a seven game win streak. Winning game one 7-5, they extended the streak to eight games and were unable to make it nine losing game two by a final of 8-4. The Bucs did match their 2022 win total with their eighth win of the season in game one. In the doubleheader, Ab'c'de Patane extended her hit streak to 11 games and hit her second home run of the season in game one.

At The Plate

Maritime

  • Maritime got hits from Reagan KereczKelsey BookerAb'c'de PataneCarleen Harring, and Hannah Burton in the win.
  • Kerecz, Patane, and Burton each drove in two runs. Erin Donlan added an RBI as well. 
  • Seven different Buccaneers scored runs in the game. 
  • Kerecz recorded a triple in the game and Patane hit a home run as the only two extra base hits for the Bucs. 
  • Kerecz and Burton each had a stolen base in the game.

Curry

  • Jillian Rogers had three hits for Curry at the plate. 
  • Jordan Ferullo and Natalia O'Kleasky each had two hits. 
  • Taylor McDermott, Madelyn White and Emily Bussiere all had one hit. 
  • O'Kleasky drove in two runs, Rogers and Gracie Martineau each drove in one.
  • Ferullo scored twice for Curry, three other players scored once. 
  • Ferullo and Rogers each had a double. O'Kleasky had a triple to round out Curry's extra base hits.
  • Mia Bianchi stole two bags in the loss. Ferullo and McDermott each stole one.

How It Happened

The first three innings of the game were controlled by the pitchers and the Bucs defense. Rogers went 3.1 innings perfect before allowing a base runner and neither team scored in the first three innings. In the top of the fourth, Curry broke the scoreless tie with a run on Rogers' single through the left side of the infield to score Bianchi. The Bucs answered in a big way in the bottom of the inning on Patane's second home run of the season that scored two giving the Bucs a 2-1 lead after four.

Curry tied the game in the top of the fifth inning on an O'Kleasky single to right, scoring Ferullo. In the bottom of the fifth, Maritime retook the lead, this time by three runs. Kerecz tripled to right center, scoring Pope and Ashley Haller. Donlan drove in Kerecz on a ground out to second to give the Buccaneers a 5-2 advantage.

In the top of the sixth, Curry scored one run to make it 5-3. Burton would get that run back plus one in the bottom of the sixth on a two RBI single to right center scoring Butler and Harring.

The Colonels added two runs in the top of the seventh but it wasn't enough as Klemp and the Bucs retired the side to take the win, 7-5, and extend their win streak to eight games and matched their win total from 2022 in the process.

  • Reagan Kerecz had three hits for the Bucs in game two including a single, a double, and a triple. 
  • Erin DonlanKelsey BookerAb'c'de Patane, and Abby Pope each had one hit. Patane's hit extends her hit streak to 11 games.
  • Kerecz and Pope each scored twice in the loss.
  • Donlan drove in three of the four runs, Kerecz plated the other.
  • Patane stole two bags in the game.

Curry

  • Natalie O'Kleasky, Taylor McDermott, Madelyn White, Jillian Rogers, and Caitlyn wood all had three-hit games. Samantha King added a hit as well.
  • Rogers drove in five runs in the win. King and White drove in two and one respectively.
  • O'Kleasky, White, and Rogers all scored twice. 
  • Rogers had a double and a triple to her credit.

How It Happened

Curry scored one in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead in game two.

Neither team scored again until the top of the fifth inning when Curry scored four including two in Rogers' triple to left. Curry led 5-0 after four and a half. In the bottom of the fifth, Maritime scored twice on Donlan's two-RBI single through the left side to make it 5-2.

Curry added three in the top of the sixth to make it 8-2 and held the Bucs in the bottom of the sixth.

Maritime didn't allow any runs in the top of the seventh and scored twice in the bottom of the seventh but that would be all for the hosts as they lost game two, 8-4, ending their winning streak at eight games, the longest in program history.

 

What's Next

The Bucs are back home on Saturday to take on Norwich University in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 12pm.
