Bucs and Jays Strikeout Cancer; St. Joseph Sweep Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- On Wednesday afternoon the Buccaneers played host to St. Joseph (Conn) in a non-conference doubleheader at Rollins Field. Prior to the games the Buccaneers sported "Strikeout Cancer" t-shirts, temporary tattoos and ribbons to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer in partnership with the NFCA and American Childhood Cancer Organization. You can donate to a great cause at acco.org/donate. On the field, the Blue Jays swept the doubleheader winning game one 5-1 and game two 4-1.

 

Game One

  • Jenna Zup, Alyssa Roberts, and McKenzie Fairfax all had two hits games.
  • Isabel Milardo and Jenna Masiello added one hit apiece.
  • Roberts and Fairfax both drove in two runs. Masiello drove in one.
  • Zup scored twice; Milardo, Masiello and Brianna Catalani each scored once.
  • Milardo stole a base in the win.

How It Happened

The Blue Jays scored first in the top of the first inning, plating three to take a 3-0 lead. Roberts singled to score Zup and Fairfax singled bringing in Catalani and Masiello.

In the top of the second, the Jays scored another on a Masiello single that brought in Milardo.

The Middle innings went scoreless as Klemp settled in in the circle. Then, in the bottom of the sixth, the Bucs had the bases loaded and Biondo walked to bring in Lane to get the Bucs on the board. Maritime trailed 4-1 after six innings of play.

USJ scored one more in the top of the seventh on a Roberts single scoring Zup for the second time and the Blue Jays went on to win game one by a final of 5-1.

  • Hannah Burton and Rubi Butler both had two hit games for the Bucs.
  • Ab'c'de Patane and Klemp each had one hit.
  • Burton and Patane recorded doubles.
  • Patane drove in the only run for the Bucs.
  • Burton scored the run in the loss.

St. Joseph

  • Alyssa Roberts and Brianna Catalani each had two hits in the game.
  • Jenna Zup, McKenzie Fairfax, Madelyn Ellis, and Allison Conger all had one hit in the win.
  • Zup recorded a triple as the only extra base hit of the game for the Jays.
  • Zup, Isabel Milardo, Catalani, and Conger all drove in a run.
  • Zup, Roberts, Fairfax, and Alexis Volinsky all scored.

How It Happened

After a scoreless first, the Blue Jays scored their first on Conger's single to center field, scoring Fairfax. USJ led 1-0 after two.

In the bottom of the third, with Burton on second, Patane doubled down the left field line hitting the foul line in the process to bring Burton around to score, tying the game at 1-1.

In the top of the fifth the Jays opened the game up scoring three runs. The first came in on Zup's triple, the second on a Milardo sacrifice fly, and the third on a Catalani single to make it 4-1 Blue Jays.

The Buccaneers threatened in the sixth and held St. Joseph at bay for the final two innings. Unable to get back into the game, the Bucs fell in game two, 4-1.

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers will play Salem State at home on Saturday in conference play beginning at 12pm. It will also be Senior Day for the Buccaneers lone senior Abby Pope.
