Softball Walks Off Dean Twice for Saturday Sweep

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Saturday afternoon, softball hosted Dean College at Rollins field for a non-conference doubleheader. The Bucs entered the day riding a three-game winning streak and the Bulldogs had yet to win a game this season. Two exciting games took all seven innings in game one with the Bucs walking off 5-4, and game two took all seven innings and then some with Maritime walking off in the bottom of the ninth, 9-8.

 

Game One

At the Plate

Maritime

  • Ab'c'de Patane led the way for the Bucs offensively with three hits, including a two-run home run and a double. She drove in four runs and scored once.
  • Reagan Kerecz added three hits in the game, all singles.
  • Erin Donlan had a two-hit game for Maritime with a single and a double and she scored twice.
  • Kelsey Booker went 1-for-3 at the plate and had the game-winning walk off sacrifice fly to right field and scored a run.
  • Pinch runner Ashley Haller also scored a run in the win.

Dean

  • Sari Albury had a three-hit game, with a double, and drove in two runs.
  • Gianna Bencivengo had three hits in the game.
  • Five other Bulldogs recorded hits.
  • Four different players scored in the game. 
  • Alex Marie and Meridith Landers each had a double in the loss.
  • Shirley Chan was credited with a stolen base.

 

How It Happened

Maritime scored first in the bottom of the first on Patane's double to right center that scored Booker and Donlan.

The Bucs 2-0 lead didn't last long as the Bulldogs cut the lead in half into top of the second on a Chan single that scored Glynn.

The 2-1 score held until the bottom of the third when Patane hit her first career home run over the right center field fence to score herself and Haller. The Bucs led by three, 4-1, after three innings of play.

No runs came across in the fourth, then, in the top of the fifth, Albury doubled for Dean scoring Sydnee Ramos making it 4-2.

Down 4-2 in the seventh, the 'Dogs scored two in the top of the seventh inning, spoiling the Bucs hopes of not having to play the bottom of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Donlan tripled and on the next at bat Booker flew out to right field driving in Donlan to win the game 5-4.

Maritime

  • Hannah Burton added two hits and Kelsey BookerRubi Butler, and Klemp all had one hit.
  • Donlan, Butler and Burton each had a double.
  • Harring and Burton each drove in two runs in the game. One of Harring's was the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
  • Patane and Butler each drove in one run. 
  • Klemp was credited with a stolen base in the win.

Dean

  • Gianna Bencivengo and Jilian Glynn both had three-hit games.
  • Alex Marie, Sydnee Ramos and Stewart all had two-hit games. 
  • Sari Albury, Meredith Landers, and Jaylee Martinez all had one hit.
  • Albury recorded a double, the only extra base hit of the game for Dean.
  • Marie, Albury, and Bencivengo all drove in two runs. Glynn drove in one.
  • Ramos scored three times for the Bulldogs and five other players each scored once.

 

How It Happened

Dean took the lead early in game two scoring once in the top of the first on a Glynn single to right to score Ramos. The Bulldogs held on to their 1-0 lead until the top of the fourth when they extended it to 3-0 on a Marie single that scored two runs.

The Bulldogs added to their lead once again in the top of the sixth and took a commanding 6-0 lead over the Buccaneers. The Bucs didnt' roll over though as they answered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Harring single that scored two, a Butler double that sored one and a two RBI double off the bat of Burton that scored Klemp and Haller.

Down 6-5, the Bucs sat the Bulldogs down in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the frame, Harring singled to left that resulted in the tying run scoring on an error by Dean in left field to make it 6-6 after seven.

Free softball ensued as the teams went to extras. After a scoreless eighth in which the Bulldogs left the bases loaded, Dean scored two in the top of the ninth to take another lead, this time two runs, 8-6, going into the bottom of the ninth. With the international extra innings rule in play, starting the inning with a runner at second, Maritime scored their first run of the bottom of the ninth on a Donlan single that brought in Pope from second. Patane came up two batters later and singled to score Donlan from second to tie the game at 8-8. With one out in the inning, Harring singled to center field. Patane was sent home and though Marie threw a perfect ball to the plate for Ramos to tag Patane, Ab'c'de slid around the tag and scored the game-winning run for the Bucs to walk off the 'Dogs once again, the time 9-8.

The Bucs are back home on Sunday to take on Bay Path in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1pm.
