Off-Shore Sailing Qualifies for Kennedy Cup

Annapolis, MD -- Over the weekend of October 22nd and 23rd, the Buccaneers off-shore sailing team competed in the McMillan Cup, the qualifying race for the Kennedy Cup, the Championship event of Collegiate sailing in November. With a qualifying spot on the line, the Bucs finished eighth to secure that spot in the Kennedy.

In the weekend's four events, the Bucs finished eighth in three events and fifth in their final event. Unfortunately, the races on Saturday were postponed due to weather conditions. On Sunday, with 13-18 knot winds, the teams were able to get in four heats on the waters off of Annapolis. URI finished first with six points. Merchant Marine finished second with eight, and host Navy finished third with 15 points. The Buccaneers finished with 29 points, in a tie with Maine Maritime and were awarded the tiebreaker over the Mariners for their eight place finish. Army rounded out the top 10 finishing last with 39 points.
