Sailing: The Off-Shore Sailing Team Finishes 4th in Opening Weekend

CASTINE, Maine -- The Buccaneers off-shore sailing team began their 2022-2023 schedule in Maine on Saturday, September 10th and 11th in the Penobscot Bay Open. What should have been a two-day event ended up being a single day excursion as there was no wind to sail on the second day.

With winds at only 6-7 knots, the nine teams and 18 boats were able to get through eight races. The Buccaneers had a strong showing as their A boat finished third overall with 50 points behind Tufts University's B boat with 17 points and their A boat with 41 points.

Overall, the Buccaneers boats combined for 162 points and a fourth place finish. Tuft ran away with the victory with 58 points. Salve Regina came in second with 117 points and Vermont finished third with 145 points. The Bucs barely edged out Northeastern as the Huskies finished fifth with 162 points.

The Hosts, Maine Maritime, finished sixth and seventh respectively with their four boats.

The Off-Shore team will be in Annapolis, Maryland next weekend for the Shields Trophy, hosted by the Naval Academy.
