CASTINE, Maine --  Senior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) notched 11 kills, six digs and three service aces to lead Merchant Marine to a 3-0 victory over Massachusetts Maritime by game scores of 25-8, 25-14 and 25-6 in opening round play of the Eighth Annual Maritime Volleyball Classic Saturday evening at Maine Maritime’s Smith Gymnasium.

 

Junior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) added six kills and four digs for the Mariners (6-1), who received four kills, four digs and three service aces from junior Megan Toler (Prunedale, Calif.).  Senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) chipped in with four kills for the winners, who also received 24 set assists, four digs and three service aces from sophomore Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.).

 

Junior Jennifer Roy (Attleboro, Mass.) recorded three kills in the setback for the Buccaneers (1-7), who also received two kills and a pair of digs from sophomore Marie Harrison (Weymouth, Mass.).  Senior Kaleigh Hoffman (Noblesville, Ind.) and sophomore Tina Ruggeri (Bourne, Mass.) each collected seven digs for Massachusetts Maritime, which received a combined eight set assists from sophomore Michelle Sheehan (Attleboro, Mass.) and freshman Maddie Coughlin (Monroe, Conn.).

 

Massachusetts Maritime takes on SUNY-Maritime and host Maine Maritime in second round play of the Eighth Annual Maritime Classic on Sunday afternoon at Smith Gymnasium beginning at 12:30 p.m., while Merchant Marine squares off with the host Mariners in its second round match Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m.
