Volleyball Tops Fitchburg State 3-1 For First MASCAC Victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. --  Sophomore Marie Harrison (Weymouth, Mass.) notched a double-double effort of 17 kills and 10 digs to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 3-1 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference volleyball victory over Fitchburg State by game scores of 25-15, 20-25, 25-21 and 26-24 in a league match played Tuesday evening at Parkinson Gymnasium.

 

The visiting Buccaneers (3-17, 1-3 MASCAC) ended a 57-match conference winless streak that dated back to October 14, 2006 with the triumph, as freshman Kaylee Tolman (East Sandwich, Mass.) added a career-high 17 digs, six kills, four set assists and two aces on the night for the winners.  Freshman Maddie Coughlin (Monroe, Conn.) chipped in with eight digs, five set assists and three kills for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received three kills from freshman Casey Sullivan (Sagamore Beach, Mass.). 

 

Sophomore Tina Ruggeri (Bourne, Mass.) collected 31 digs and a match-high four service aces for the Buccaneers, which also received a double-double performance of 14 set assists and 12 digs from sophomore Michelle Sheehan (Attleboro, Mass.).  Senior Kaleigh Hoffman (Noblesville, Ind.) chipped in with five digs and three set assists for the visitors, who recorded 84 digs and 10 service aces overall.

 

Freshman Lauren Riccardi (Tewksbury, Mass.) posted six kills and seven digs in the setback for the host Falcons (1-13, 0-4 MASCAC), who received six kills each and a combined five digs from juniors Annie Woolley (Malden, Mass.) and Kathryn Carroll (Shrewsbury, Mass.).  Freshman Jessica Peirce (Brentwood, N.H.) notched a match-high 33 digs on the evening for Fitchburg State, which received seven set assists and three service aces from senior Kathryn McGroarty (Quincy, Mass.) along with 10 digs from senior Serene Pease (Ashland, Mass.).

 

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Westfield State in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Fitchburg State heads to Chicopee, Mass. on Thursday evening for a non-league match with Bay Path that begins at 7:00 p.m.
