CASTINE, Maine --  The Massachusetts Maritime volleyball team dropped a pair of non-league matches to SUNY-Maritime (3-1) and host Maine Maritime (3-0) in second round action of the Eighth Annual Maritime Classic played Sunday afternoon at Smith Gymnasium.

 

Senior Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y.) notched a double-double effort of 16 kills and 10 digs in the Privateers’ (5-4) 25-18, 25-20, 25-27, 25-13 victory in the opening contest of the day, as fellow senior Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) also posted a double-double performance of 14 digs and 12 kills.  Junior Meredith Hayes (Houston, Tex.) added 10 kills, five digs and five service aces for SUNY-Maritime, which received 11 digs and six kills from freshman Abby Steele (Crossville, Tenn.), 20 digs from freshman Abby Solomos (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) and 39 set assists from freshman Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y.).

 

Junior Jennifer Roy (Attleboro, Mass.) collected 12 kills and a pair of digs in the opening setback for the Buccaneers (1-9), who received 16 digs and four kills from sophomore Marie Harrison (Weymouth, Mass.) as well as four kills and five digs from freshman Casey Sullivan (Sagamore Beach, Mass.).  Sophomore Michelle Sheehan (Attleboro, Mass.), who earned a spot on the all-tournament team for her efforts on the weekend, registered 22 set assists and a pair of digs for Massachusetts Maritime, which received 14 digs from sophomore Tina Ruggeri (Bourne, Mass.) and a combined 13 digs from senior Kaleigh Hoffman (Noblesville, Ind.) and freshman Kaylee Tolman (East Sandwich, Mass.).

 

Sophomore Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J.) notched 10 kills, five service aces and a pair of digs in the host Mariners’ (7-5) 25-15, 25-12, 25-20 nightcap victory that gave Maine Maritime its sixth tournament title overall, while sophomore Maggie MacMahon (Boise, Idaho) and freshman Jessica D’Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) each added five kills for the winners.  Sophomore Maria Perez (San Juan, P.R.) chipped in with six digs for the Mariners, who received 21 set assists from sophomore Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.).

 

Harrison posted five kills and five digs in the nightcap for Massachusetts Maritime, which received eight digs from Tolman along with six set assists from Sheehan.  Ruggeri recorded six digs for the Buccaneers, who received three service aces from freshman Maddie Coughlin (Monroe, Conn.).

 

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Leicester, Mass. on Tuesday evening to take on Becker in a non-league outing beginning at 7:00 p.m., while SUNY-Maritime travels to Bronxville, N.Y. on Tuesday evening to take on Sarah Lawrence in a non-league clash that also begins at 7:00 p.m.  Maine Maritime hosts Unity in a non-league match on Wednesday evening at Smith Gymnasium beginning at 7:00 p.m.
