CASTINE, Maine --  Junior Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.) notched four kills, five digs and five set assists to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 3-0 non-league victory over SUNY-Maritime and a runner-up finish at the Fourth Annual Maritime Volleyball Classic Sunday afternoon at Maine Maritime’s Smith Gymnasium, as the Buccaneers dropped a 3-0 non-league decision to the host and tournament champion Mariners in the final match of the day.

 

Sophomore Emily Calnan (Hingham, Mass.) added four kills, five service aces and a pair of digs in the opening win for Massachusetts Maritime (2-6), which came by game scores of 25-20, 25-15 and 25-18.  Senior Michaela Garrity (Tiverton, R.I.) and junior Meghan Weir (North Andover, Mass.) each had three kills and combined for 10 digs for the Buccaneers, who also received seven service aces from senior Melanie Holder (Calidonia, Panama) as well as a pair of kills and three digs from sophomore Marissa Boudreau (New Bedford, Mass.).

 

Junior Charlotte Acklin (Lewes, Del.) notched nine kills and six digs in the setback for the Privateers (0-6), who also received 10 set assists from junior Christine McCormak (Goshen, N.Y.) as well as three service aces from freshman Alyssa Esposito (Farmingdale, N.Y.).  The win was the second for Massachusetts over SUNY on the weekend, as the Buccaneers collected a 3-1 triumph in yesterday’s opening round contest.

 

Maine Maritime wrapped up a 4-0 performance in this year’s Classic with a 25-11, 25-8, 25-11 victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the final match, as the Mariners (5-4) were led by freshman Gillian O’Neal’s (Burbank, Calif.) eight kills, six service aces and five digs.  Sophomore Jess Menges (Old Forge, N.Y.) added six kills for the hosts, who also received 18 set assists from sophomore Samantha Tumolo (Eastport, N.Y.).  Calnan posted three kills in the setback for the Buccaneers, who also received seven set assists from Langley as well as a pair of kills and five digs from Garrity.

 

Langley, Holder, O’Neal and McCormak were joined on the Maritime Classic all-tournament team by Maine Maritime junior Sydney Robertson (Barnstead, N.H.) and senior Melissa Lail (Elizabeth, Colo.), who was named as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

 

Massachusetts Maritime opens Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Tuesday evening by heading to Worcester, Mass. to take on Worcester State at Assumption’s Laska Gymnasium beginning at 7:00 p.m.  Maine Maritime travels to Machias, Maine on Wednesday evening to take on Maine-Machias in a non-league outing at 7:00 p.m., while SUNY-Maritime hosts Farmingdale State in Skyline Conference match on Wednesday evening beginning at 7:00 p.m.
