CASTINE, Maine --  Sophomore Emily Calnan (Hingham, Mass.) registered six kills and four service aces to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 3-1 non-league victory over SUNY-Maritime and a split in first round action at the Fourth Annual Maritime Volleyball Classic played Saturday afternoon at Maine Maritime’s Smith Gymnasium, as the Buccaneers opened the day with 3-0 non-league setback to the host Mariners.

 

Freshman Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.) also recorded six kills in the nightcap triumph for Massachusetts Maritime (1-5), as the Buccaneers dropped the opening set by a 28-26 margin before taking the final three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-22 and 25-21.  Freshman Melissa Harris (Scituate, Mass.) added three kills for the winners, who also received a pair of kills and seven digs from senior Michaela Garrity (Tiverton, R.I.) as well as two kills and three digs from junior Danielle Soar (Templeton, Mass.).  Freshman Stephanie O’Connor (Westwood, Mass.) collected 13 digs for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received nine set assists and nine digs from junior Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.) as well as three set assists and eight digs from junior Meghan Weir (North Andover, Mass.).

 

Junior Charlotte Acklin (Lewes, Del.) notched eight kills and 20 digs in the setback for the Privateers (0-4), who also received five kills from freshman Hannah Pell (Southampton, N.Y.).  Senior Alyssa Pourmonir (Pittston, Pa.) added 15 digs for SUNY-Maritime, which also received a combined 14 set assists from junior Christine McCormak (Goshen, N.Y.) and freshman Ayden Johnson (Baldwinsville, N.Y.).

 

Massachusetts Maritime fell in the opening match of the tournament by a 25-7, 25-8, 25-8 margin to Maine Maritime, as the victorious Mariners (3-4) were led by freshman Gillian O’Neal’s (Burbank, Calif.) seven kills and 10 service aces.  Senior Melissa Lail (Elizabeth, Colo.) added seven kills as well for the hosts, who also received six kills and five digs from sophomore Jess Menges (Old Forge, N.Y.) as well as 23 set assists from sophomore Samantha Tumolo (Eastport, N.Y.).  Langley paced the Buccaneers with a pair of kills and three kills in the setback, while Garrity and Brain each chipped in with six digs.

 

Sunday’s second round of the Fourth Annual Maritime Classic will be a reverse of today’s round-robin, as Massachusetts Maritime will face SUNY-Maritime at 10:00 a.m. before taking on Maine Maritime in the final match of the tournament at Smith Gymnasium beginning at 1:00 p.m.
