Bucs and Lancers Go Toe-To-Toe in Playoff Extra Time Thriller

WORCESTER, Mass -- Buccaneers women's soccer made history on Tuesday becoming the first team in program history to make the MASCAC playoffs. After losing to Worcester State on Saturday, 5-0, the Bucs faced off with the Lancers on Tuesday in the Conference Quarterfinals and gave Worcester fits for 120 minutes. After 90 minutes of scoreless regulation, the teams went to a 20-minute extra time period. In the 97th minute, six minutes into extra time, the Lancers scored and held on for the 1-0 win.

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Senior captain Ally Reddish took two shots on target in the match for the Bucs.
  • Taylor Blanton also had one shot in the loss.
  • Goalkeeper Reagan Kerecz made an astounding 25 saves, third all-time in program history in a single game, on 26 shots faced. 
  • In total, Maritime took three shots, two on target, and had one corner kick in the match.

Worcester State

  • Julianne Earnest scored the game winner for the Lancers in the 97th minute.
  • Lucy Watson was credited with an assist on the goal.
  • Goalkeeper Ella Gumienny made two saves and kept a clean sheet in 120 minutes.
  • In total, Worcester took 47 shots, 26 on target, and had 15 corners in the match.

How It Happened

Worcester outshot the Bucs 13-2 in the first half but both defenses and goalkeepers kept the match scoreless to the half.

In the second half, the Bucs did not get a shot on target and the Lancers took 26 shots and still, neither team scored.

With the game scoreless at the end of regulation, the teams went to two 10-minute extra time periods to be played in full. In the 97th minute of the game, just over six minutes into extra time, Earnest scored for the Lancers to put them up 1-0. Maritime, unable to answer, lost the hard fought match by the same 1-0 score.
