FINAL:              WORCESTER STATE 4, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 1

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Brendan Whitson (Auburn, Mass.) netted a pair of goals and an assist for five points to lead Worcester State to a 4-1 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Whitson staked the visiting Lancers (5-3-4, 3-0-1 MASCAC) to a 1-0 lead just 3:26 into the contest with an unassisted marker, but the host Buccaneers (5-4-2, 1-2-1 MASCAC) evened matters in the 22nd minute when senior Asa Mills (Westport, Mass.) converted a corner kick from junior Rob Robbs (Braintree, Mass.) for his second tally of the season.  Junior Derek Kareta (Ludlow, Mass.) gave Worcester State the lead for good in the 28th minute on a feed from Whitson, and after senior Phillip Cepeda’s (Southbridge, Mass.) breakaway in the 65th minute extended that margin to 3-1, Whitson iced the visitors’ triumph with his second goal of the day (fifth of the season) on an assist from fellow senior Brian Cormier (Hudson, Mass.) with 4:14 remaining to account for the final score.

Sophomore Nick Zucco (Ludlow, Mass.) picked up his fifth win of the season with a three-save effort in goal for Worcester State, while freshman Joe Cohen (Plymouth, Mass.) made six stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Lancers outshot the Buccaneers by a 15-6 margin on the afternoon.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Waltham, Mass. on Tuesday evening to take on 12th-ranked Brandeis in a non-league match that begins at 7:00 p.m., while Worcester State heads into Boston on Tuesday afternoon to take on UMass Boston in a non-league outing beginning at 3:30 p.m.
