FINAL:              MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 2, BECKER 1

LEICESTER, Mass. --  Senior Daniel Riley (Hanover, Mass.) and freshman Konnor Scarponi (Brunswick, Maine) each netted goals as Massachusetts Maritime opened its 2013 season with a 2-1 non-league college men’s soccer victory over Becker Wednesday evening at Alumni Field.

Riley gave the visiting Buccaneers (1-0) the early advantage after converting a corner kick 6:41 into action, and that tally held up until Scarponi’s first collegiate marker with just over 13 minutes remaining provided Massachusetts Maritime with an important insurance goal, as freshman Alexandre Bresse (Quebec City, Que.) sliced the host Hawks’ (0-3) deficit in half less than two minutes later on a feed from junior Ryan Barry (North Attleboro, Mass.).  That would prove to be Becker’s final shot of the contest, however, as the visitors held off the late charge to post the triumph.

Freshman Thomas Funkhauser (Purcellville, Va.) picked up his first collegiate victory in goal without having to make a save in the opening half of play for the Buccaneers, who also received a pair of second half stops from fellow freshman Joe Cohen (Plymouth, Mass.), while senior Tim MacDonald (Holden, Mass.) made 14 saves in the setback for the Hawks, including nine after intermission.  Massachusetts Maritime outshot Becker by a 26-4 margin for the evening and took 12 of the 14 corner kicks in the match.

Massachusetts Maritime will be idle until next Wednesday evening when the Buccaneers host Wentworth in their non-league home opener at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Becker heads to Fitchburg, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Fitchburg State in a non-league outing that begins at Noon.
