FINAL:              MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 2, SALEM STATE 1

SALEM, Mass. --  Sophomore Nick Parker’s (Plymouth, Mass.) goal with just under 20 minutes remaining proved to be the game-winner that lifted Massachusetts Maritime to a 2-1 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer victory over Salem State Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The visiting Buccaneers (4-0-1, 1-0 MASCAC) continued their best start since a 4-0-2 skein to begin the 2001 season with the triumph over the defending league regular season champion and host Vikings (0-5, 0-1 MASCAC), who took a 1-0 lead just 7:45 into the contest when senior Eryk Fernandez (Nipomo, Calif.) converted a feed from fellow senior Jeffrey Iwanicki (Salem, Mass.) for his fourth tally of the season.  Senior Asa Mills (Westport, Mass.) evened matters for Massachusetts Maritime in the 28th minute with his first goal of the season on a deflection in front, and Parker provided the heroics for the visitors in the 71st minute of action, as his first collegiate goal came from 15 yards out in the middle to give the Buccaneers the lead.  Freshman Matthew McDonough (Framingham, Mass.) made a big defensive save in the closing minutes for Massachusetts Maritime, as he headed away a potential game-tying shot to preserve the triumph.

Freshman Joe Cohen (Plymouth, Mass.) picked up his third victory of the season with seven saves, including five second half stops, in goal for Massachusetts Maritime, while junior Nondas Kargakis (Heraklion, Greece) made a pair of saves in the setback for Salem State as the Vikings outshot the Buccaneers by an 18-7 margin for the match.  The triumph was Massachusetts Maritime’s first over Salem State since a 2-0 victory on October 9, 2004 in Buzzards Bay, a span of eight matches.

Massachusetts Maritime travels to Paxton, Mass. on Thursday afternoon to take on Anna Maria in a non-league outing that begins at 4:00 p.m., while Salem State heads to Willimantic, Conn. on Tuesday afternoon to take on Eastern Connecticut in a non-league match that also begins at 4:00 p.m.
