Cohen Earns Second Straight, Third Overall MASCAC Men's Soccer Rookie Of The Week Honor

Massachusetts Maritime freshman goalkeeper Joe Cohen was named as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week for the second straight week and third time overall this season on Sunday evening for his performance in helping to lead the Buccaneers to their first conference semifinal appearance in nine years.

A native of Plymouth, Mass. and a graduate of Plymouth South High School, Cohen posted a 1.00 goals against average and a .750 saves percentage during the MASCAC Championships, as he made a pair of saves to record his sixth victory and fourth shutout in Massachusetts Maritime’s 1-0 triumph over Salem State last Tuesday evening in the conference quarterfinals at Clean Harbors Stadium.  Cohen made four saves in a 2-0 setback at top-seeded Worcester State last Friday evening in the MASCAC semifinals to finish the season with a 1.65 goals against average and 89 saves in 17 matches (11 starts) this fall.

Cohen, who also copped the MASCAC honor on September 22nd and again last Sunday, earned Massachusetts Maritime’s seventh weekly conference accolade of the season that included a pair of Player of the Week nods and five Rookie of the Week selections.

The Buccaneers finished the season with their highest victory total (8-9-2) since 2004 under Head Coach Greg Perry, who last week was named as the 2013 MASCAC Champion’s Choice Coach of the Year for the third time in his career.  Massachusetts Maritime’s quarterfinal win over Salem State was the first in program post-season history and highlighted a campaign that also saw the Buccaneers notch triumphs over eventual MASCAC tournament champion Bridgewater State as well as rival Coast Guard.
