FINAL:              MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 1, WENTWORTH 0

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Freshman Konnor Scarponi (Brunswick, Maine) converted a corner kick 11:10 into the second half to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 1-0 non-league college men’s soccer victory over Wentworth Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Scarponi curled his kick in from the left side of the cage for his second goal and game-winner of the young season for the host Buccaneers (2-0), and fellow freshman Joe Cohen (Plymouth, Mass.) took care of the rest in net with four second half saves to earn his first collegiate win in goal for Massachusetts Maritime.  Freshman Thomas Funkhauser (Purcellville, Va.) made three first half stops in a swirling wind for the hosts, who are off to a 2-0 start for a second straight year.

Freshman Chase Richard (Smithfield, R.I.) made a pair of saves in the setback for the visiting Leopards (0-5), who held an 11-6 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corners for the evening, as Cohen stopped a pair of point blank shots in the final 15 minutes of action to preserve the shutout for the Buccaneers.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Coast Guard in a non-league outing on Monday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 6:00 p.m., while Wentworth hosts Roger Williams in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match on Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field in Boston that begins at Noon.
