Cohen Named As MASCAC Men's Soccer Player, Rookie Of The Week

Massachusetts Maritime freshman goalkeeper Joe Cohen was named as both the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Player and Rookie of the Week on Sunday evening for his efforts in a 2-0-1 week for the Buccaneers.

A native of Plymouth, Mass. and a graduate of Plymouth South High School, Cohen stopped 20 of 21 shots he faced while posting an 0.37 goals against average and a .952 saves percentage in the three matches, including seven stops in Massachusetts Maritime’s first victory over defending league champion Salem State in nine years with a 2-1 road triumph on Saturday.  He also recorded six saves in the Buccaneers’ first victory in 23 series meetings with rival Coast Guard last Monday in a 1-0 home win last Monday, and Cohen added seven more stops in 65 minutes of action in a 1-1 draw with unbeaten Nichols last Wednesday.

Cohen has posted a 3-0-1 mark with an 0.54 goals against average and 26 saves in five appearances for Head Coach Greg Perry’s squad in the early going, as Massachusetts Maritime is off to its best start (4-0-1 overall, 1-0 in MASCAC play) in 12 years.

Cohen’s honor marks the second straight week that a Buccaneer goalkeeper has been honored by the MASCAC, as sophomore Katie Levesque (Wilmot, N.H./Kearsarge Regional) earned the nod as the league’s Women’s Soccer Player of the Week last Sunday.

Perry’s crew continues a three-match road trip on Thursday afternoon when Massachusetts Maritime heads to Paxton, Mass. to take on Anna Maria in a non-league contest that begins at 4:00 p.m. EDT.
