Scarponi Named As MASCAC Men's Soccer Rookie Of The Week

Three Massachusetts Maritime student-athletes earned honors from the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference for their performances last week on Sunday evening, as sophomore goalkeeper Katie Levesque was named as the MASCAC Women’s Soccer Player of the Week while freshmen Konnor Scarponi and James MacVarish were tabbed as the respective MASCAC Men’s Soccer and Cross Country Rookies of the Week.

Levesque, a native of Wilmot, N.H. and a graduate of Kearsarge Regional High School, stopped 23 of 24 shots she faced in a pair of draws for the Buccaneers, posting an 0.41 goals against average and a .958 saves percentage along the way.  Levesque made 19 saves in a 1-1 double overtime tie at Regis last Tuesday evening before adding four stops in a scoreless draw at Anna Maria last Thursday afternoon, as she sports an 0.29 GAA and a .970 saves percentage with two shutouts on the young season for Head Coach Ray Cabral’s squad, which is off to the best start in the program’s six-year varsity history at 1-0-2.

Scarponi, a native of Brunswick, Maine and a graduate of Brunswick High School, netted his second game-winning goal in as many contests last Wednesday evening in Massachusetts Maritime’s 1-0 triumph over Wentworth at Clean Harbors Stadium, as his first collegiate marker proved to be the deciding tally in a season-opening 2-1 victory at Becker on September 4th.  Scarponi has helped lead Head Coach Greg Perry’s Buccaneers to a second straight 2-0 start heading into Monday’s home showdown with rival Coast Guard.

MacVarish, a native of Braintree, Mass. and a graduate of Norfolk County Agricultural High School, recorded a 20th place individual finish for Massachusetts Maritime at the University of New England Invitational on Saturday, as he posted a time of 28:47 over the 8K layout in leading Head Coach Chris Ryan’s Buccaneers to a sixth place final team standing.  MacVarish has posted the top time in each of Massachusetts Maritime’s first two competitions this season, including a ninth place finish in the season-opening Lt. Travis J. Fuller Invitational on September 7th.
