Funkhauser Named As MASCAC Men's Soccer Rookie Of The Week

Two Massachusetts Maritime student-athletes earned respective Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honors on Sunday evening, as freshman keeper Thomas Funkhauser received the accolade in Men’s Soccer while fellow freshman James MacVarish collected his second Men’s Cross Country award of the season.

Funkhauser, a native of Purcellville, Va. and a graduate of Loudon Valley High School, made 10 saves without allowing a goal in a pair of matches on the week for the Buccaneers, including seven stops for his first career solo shutout in a 3-0 victory at Anna Maria last Thursday.  Funkhauser added three first half saves in a scoreless double overtime draw at Fitchburg State on Saturday, as he has posted two wins to go with an 0.33 goals against average and a .944 saves percentage in five contests to date for Head Coach Greg Perry’s Buccaneers, who are off to their best start ever at 5-0-2 on the season.  Funkhauser is the third MASCAC Rookie of the Week to come from Massachusetts Maritime this season, as fellow freshmen Konnor Scarponi (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) and Joe Cohen (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) have also earned the honor this month.

MacVarish, a native of Braintree, Mass. and a graduate of Norfolk Agricultural County Agricultural High School, earned his second Men’s Cross Country nod in three weeks for Head Coach Chris Ryan’s Buccaneers, as he placed 10th individually in a field of 91 runners to earn all-invitational honors at the Elms Blazer Invitational on Saturday, covering the 8K layout in a time of 28:48.  MacVarish, who has been Massachusetts Maritime’s top performer in all four events to date this fall, also copped the MASCAC honor on September 15th after a 20th place finish at the University of New England Invitational.

Funkhauser will lead the Buccaneers into action on Tuesday evening with a home non-league match against Salve Regina at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m. EDT, while MacVarish will lead Massachusetts Maritime into action at the CCRI Tri-State Invitational on Saturday morning in Providence, R.I. beginning at 11:00 a.m. EDT.
