Mills Named As MASCAC Men's Soccer Player Of The Week

Massachusetts Maritime senior back Asa Mills was named as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week on Sunday afternoon for his efforts in a pair of contests for the Buccaneers last week.

A native of Westport, Mass. and a graduate of Bishop Stang High School, Mills netted the game-winner 2:51 into overtime in Massachusetts Maritime’s 1-0 MASCAC victory at Bridgewater State on Saturday, as the triumph lifted the Buccaneers into a third-place tie with Fitchburg State and Framingham State in the conference standings.  Mills finished with three points on the week, as he added an assist in a 6-3 setback at 12th-ranked Brandeis last Tuesday evening.

Mills, who leads Head Coach Greg Perry’s squad in scoring with three markers and a helper for seven points on the season, gave Massachusetts Maritime its second win over the rival Bears in the last four seasons, as the Buccaneers had previously topped Bridgewater State once in 19 years prior to 2010 and are now 2-1-1 in their last four series meetings.

Mills is the fourth Buccaneer to be honored by the MASCAC this season with respective Player or Rookie of the Week accolades, as freshman goalie Joe Cohen (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) was tabbed as both the league’s Player and Rookie of the Week back on September 22nd.  Additionally, freshmen Konnor Scarponi (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) and Thomas Funkhauser (Purcellville, Va./Loudon Valley) earned respective MASCAC Rookie of the Week honors on September 15th and 29th.

Massachusetts Maritime, which stands at 6-5-2 overall and 2-2-1 in MASCAC play, heads into Boston on Tuesday afternoon to take on UMass Boston in a non-league contest that begins at 3:00 p.m. EDT.
