Cohen Earns Second MASCAC Men's Soccer Rookie Of The Week Honor Of Season

Massachusetts Maritime freshman goalkeeper Joe Cohen was named as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week for the second time this season on Sunday evening for his efforts in helping the Buccaneers secure their first post-season berth in nine years last week.

A native of Plymouth, Mass. and a graduate of Plymouth South High School, Cohen made seven saves to pick up his fifth victory and third shutout of the season in Massachusetts Maritime’s 2-0 league triumph at MCLA, a win that enabled Head Coach Greg Perry’s squad to earn home field advantage in Tuesday’s quarterfinal round against Salem State as well as the program’s first conference playoff spot since 2004.  Cohen previously copped the honor back on September 22nd in the same week in which he was tabbed as the MASCAC Player of the Week, as he stopped 20 of 21 shots faced in three contests that included seven saves in a 2-1 win at Salem State and six stops in a 1-0 shutout victory over rival Coast Guard.

On the season, Cohen has made 83 saves while appearing in 15 matches with nine starts, as he has been a part of five total shutouts for Massachusetts Maritime, which collected seven overall victories and a pair of ties during regular season play that included a 3-3-1 MASCAC slate.

Cohen’s second conference award of the season marks the sixth individual Player or Rookie of the Week accolade that Massachusetts Maritime has earned this fall.  Senior tri-captain Asa Mills (Westport, Mass./Bishop Stang) was the MASCAC Player of the Week on October 20th, while freshmen Konnor Scarponi (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) and Thomas Funkhauser (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) earn the league’s Rookie of the Week honor on September 15th and 29th, respectively.

The Buccaneers begin their quest for the MASCAC crown and an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Championships by hosting Salem State in a quarterfinal round clash on Tuesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m. EST.
