Women:s Lacrosse: Bucs Lose to Lions in Close Battle

BUZZARDS BAY, MA -- In their second to last non-conference game of the season, the Buccaneers Played host to the Emerson College Lions on Tuesday evening. In a tightly contested match between two very even teams, the Lions came out on top, 9-8.

In The Field

Maritime

  • Nora McLaughlin led all Buccaneers with three goals. 
  • Allie Dickinson scored twice.
  • Cassie LlewellynLindsy Durgin, and Paige Albertson all scored one goal.
  • Llewellyn tallied two assists, Dickinson and Durgin each added one helper.
  • Albertson picked up a game-high five ground balls. Llewellyn picked up four.
  • Llewellyn led the game with six draw controls.
  • Sarah Smialek and Beringhause each caused two turnovers.
  • Maritime picked up 34 ground balls, were successful on 17 of 22 clears, won 12 draw controls, scored on two of 13 free position shots and took 30 shots total.

Emerson

  • Callie Krosin scored four goals for the Lions.
  • Ainsley Basic scored twice.
  • Julia Mallon, Lauren Lonstreet, and Maddy Reyes all scored once.
  • Mallon, Longstreet, Basics and Hannah Beck all tallied assists.
  • Beck picked up four ground balls to lead the team.
  • Jules Rein had five draw controls in the win.
  • Khosla and Mallon had two caused turnovers each.
  • Emerson picked up 24 ground balls, were successful on 17 of 26 clears. won nine draw controls total, scored on four of eight free position shots, and took 27 total shots in the game.

How It Happened

Two very evenly matched teams played a nearly even match for a full 60 minutes. Maritime scored first, 51 seconds into the game on an Albertson goal from Durgin. Emerson proceeded to score three unanswered goals from Basic, Reyes and Krosin to take a 3-1 lead halfway through the quarter. At 6:49 of the first, Dickinson scored for Maritime to end the scoring in the first and make the score 3-2. 

In the second, The Bucs scored first to tie the score at threes. Basic scored less than a minute later to retake the lead, 4-3. With three minutes left in the half, Dickinson scored which proved to be the final score of the quarter again. The teams went into the halftime break tied, 4-4.

In the third, each team scored two goals. Emerson started it with a Mallon goal a minute in. McLaughlin went on to score two goals, one from a pass from Llewellyn, the second on a man-up opportunity on a free position to give the Bucs a 6-5 lead. Two minutes after McLaughlin's second goal of the quarter, Krosin, from Beck, scored to tie the game again at 6-6.

The Fourth quarter began with a McLaughlin goal, her third, to give Maritime the lead again, 7-6. From 9:07 in the quarter to 5:56, Emerson scored three, two from Krosin, one from Longstreet to tie the game, take the lead and add an insurance goal. The Buccaneers battled the final five minutes and a very good Lions defense held them off. With 53 second left, Durgin scored a goal to pull within one, 9-8. Emerson controlled the draw and ran out the clock to take a hard fought win over Maritime.
