Women's Lacrosse: DiScipio Sets Single-Game Scoring Record in Win

BUZZARDS BAY, MA -- The Buccaneers played host to Maine Maritime on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the 2022 Maritime Cup. The game was for second place in the tournament after SUNY Maritime took home first place Saturday afternoon. The Bucs made it very clear they were out to win and go to 2-1 on the season as they scored 17 times to take down the Mariners 17-5.

Mass Maritime

  • Senior Captain Alyssa DiScipio set a new program record in the win, scoring 10 goals, the most since Casey Sullivan scored nine against MCLA in 2018.
  • Freshman Allie Dickinson scored three times in the game with Cassie Llewellyn scoring two and Paige Albertson and Lindsy Durgin each netted one to round out the Buc scoring.
  • DiScipio and Llewellyn assisted on three goals each in the game. Dickinson added two assists and Albertson tallied one.
  • DiScipio and Caleigh Tompkins led the Bucs with five ground balls each. The Bucs picked up 26 total ground balls in the game.
  • Defensively, Llewellyn picked up four caused turnovers with defenders Kylie Maher and Hope Banell right behind her with three apiece. The Bucs caused a total of 14 turnovers in the win.
  • Mass Maritime converted 10 of 13 clears on the day.

Maine Maritime

  • Hazel Stoddard, the leading goal scorer on the season for the Mariners, along with Aubrey Mitchell, each scored two goals to lead Maine. Lily Cook scored the fifth goal.
  • Mitchell tied for the game-high lead with three assists. Stoddard added two assists.
  • Beth Labbe led all players in the game with seven ground balls. Stoddard picked up five.
  • Four different players caused turnovers for the Mariners.
  • Maine converted 12 of their 20 clear attempts.

How It Happened

The Buccaneers opened the scoring early when Llewellyn made it 1-0 27 seconds into the game. Over the first six minutes, the teams traded goals and the game was even at 2-2 with nine minutes left in the first quarter. Over those final nine minutes of the first, the Bucs scored seven unanswered, including seven from DiScipio and one with one second left in the quarter. The hosts led 9-2 after 15 minutes.

The Bucs continued to control the scoring in the second quarter scoring in the first four minutes on DiScipio's eighth of the game and the Bucs eighth unanswered. Maine made it 10-3 on a Mitchell goal with just over 10 minutes left in the half. DiScipio and Dickinson went on to score three more, two from Dickinson, in the final minutes of the first half to make the score 13-2 after 30 minutes of play.

Maine opened the scoring in the third quarter on a Cook goal with four minutes off the clock. Up 13-4, the Buccaneers scored 15 seconds later off of the draw on DiScipio's ninth. Dicking added her third later in the quarter on a pass from DiScipio. The Bucs took an 11-goal, 15-4 lead into the fourth.

Llewellyn scored first in the fourth on a pass from Albertson in a power play situation after a yellow was issued to Maine. With just under four minutes left in regulation, Durgin scored her first career goal to cap off the scoring for the hosts. Maine added a fifth and final goal with three minutes remaining. The Bucs went onto take second place in the 2022 Maritime Cup and improved to 2-1 on the season with a 17-5 win over the Mariners.

The Buccaneers are idle until Saturday, March 13th when they host Clark University at Clean Harbors Stadium at 1pm.
