Women's Lacrosse Sails Past Corsairs

DARTMOUTH, MA -- The Buccaneers took on the Corsairs on Wednesday evening in the team's last warmup before conference play opens this weekend. A high-scoring first half propelled the Bucs over their host, 16-8, to improve to 6-2 on the season.

  • Melanny Sanchez Alvarez led the Corsairs with four goals. 
  • Widline Thomas scored twice. Kara McLaughlin and Claire Peterson each scored one goal.

How It Happened

The Buccaneers scored six goals in each of the first two quarters. DiScipio opened the scoring nine seconds into the game. Alvarez tied the game at 1-1 two minutes later. Maritime then went on a five-goal run in a three-minute span in the middle of the quarter to take a 6-1 lead. That score would stand at the end of the first 15 minutes of play.

In the second, the Bucs extended their unanswered streak to eight goals, including back-to-back goals from McLaughlin. Dartmouth broke up the streak with a goal of their own to make it 9-2 with three minutes left in the half. In the final 1:28 of the quarter, the teams went back and forth on five goals scored with the Bucs scoring three and the Corsairs netting two. The Bucs closed out the half on a Durgin goal with six second left and led 12-4 at the break.

In the second half, the Bucs outscored the Corsairs once again in the third, this time 2-1. Durgin and Dickinson scored in the first two minutes. Dartmouth scored with five minutes remaining in the third. The score heading to the fourth was 14-5 in favor of the guests.

Dartmouth outscored Maritime in the fourth, 3-2, opening the quarter with two goals to extend their run to three goals. Llewellyn broke up the comeback attempt with a man-up goal with nine minutes left. Alvarez scored the final Corsair goal with just under nine minutes left to play to make it 15-8. DiScipio capped out the game with her 99th career goal with 16 seconds left in the game. The Bucs took a 16-8 win back to Buzzards Bay as the team was triumphant in the latest battle for Pirate Supremacy.

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers travel to Fitchburg State on Friday evening for their first conference game of 2022 against the Falcons at 7pm.
