BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Maine Maritime and Merchant Marine captured opening round victories in the Third Annual Maritime Volleyball Classic on Saturday evening, as both Mariner squads notched respective 3-0 triumphs over SUNY-Maritime and host Massachusetts Maritime at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center.

Junior Ariel Knights (Brookton, Maine) registered six kills, five service aces and seven digs in the opening win for Maine Maritime (4-3), which also received five kills, eight service aces and four digs from sophomore Betsy Trenckmann (La Veta, Colo.) and four kills from freshman Jess Menges (Old Forge, N.Y.).  Freshman Samantha Tumolo (Manorville, N.Y.) added 10 set assists for the Mariners, who improved to 7-0 all-time in Maritime Classic action.

Senior Jerrica Romero (Bronx, N.Y.) notched six kills and nine digs in the setback for SUNY-Maritime’s Privateers (0-5), who also received four kills and three digs from sophomore Tessa Jardine (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and eight set assists from junior Alyssa Pourmonir (Pittston, Pa.).

Sophomore Cassandra Palma (Loomis, Calif.) led Merchant Marine (5-3) with 10 kills, nine digs and seven service aces in its 25-10, 25-17, 25-9 victory over the host Buccaneers (0-6), while sophomore Michelle Danhof (San Antonio, Tex.) and freshman Charlene Swick (Incline Village, Nev.) added six kills each for the Mariners, who also received 12 set assists from sophomore Paige Queen (Falcon, Colo.).

Senior Alex Burgess-Chrost (Leominster, Mass.) collected four kills in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received two kills, two service aces and three set assists from sophomore Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.).  Freshman Emily Calnan (Hingham, Mass.) registered a pair of kills as well for the Buccaneers, who also received seven digs from freshman Marissa Boudreau (New Bedford, Mass.) as well as four set assists and two digs from freshman Kelsey Black (Plympton, Mass.).

The Third Annual Maritime Volleyball Classic concludes with four matches on Sunday at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center, as Merchant Marine and SUNY-Maritime open the day’s action by squaring off at 9:00 a.m.  Massachusetts Maritime takes on Maine Maritime at 11:00 a.m., while the afternoon’s action will see Merchant Marine play Maine Maritime at 1:00 p.m. followed by Massachusetts Maritime and SUNY-Maritime in the final contest at 3:00 p.m.
