Men's Lacrosse Win's First Ever Playoff Game in Win over ECSU

BUZZARDS BAY, MA -- Maritime hosted Eastern Connecticut in the Quarterfinals of the Little East Conference playoffs on Tuesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium. For the first time in program history, the Bucs were victorious in a playoff game with a 15-5 win over the Warriors

In The Field

Maritime

  • Nick Lamattina scored a game-high four goals in the win.
  • Gage Coolahan added three goals.
  • Spencer Jones scored twice in the game.
  • Mitchell MaidaPeter RaeiDale DonovanPatrick LawsonBraeden Kosiewicz, and Doug Walker all scored once for the bucs.
  • Maida recorded four assists in the game.  Jack Iversen assisted on three goals. 
  • Coolahan, Lamattina, and Kosiewicz all had one helper.
  • Brian Rosher led the game with 10 ground balls. Rosher also won 16 of 24 faceoffs he took. 
  • Lally and Lawson each caused three turnovers.
  • Maritime picked up 48 ground balls, were successful on all 24 of their clear attempts, won 16 of 24 faceoffs, scored four power play goals on eight opportunities, and took a total of 66 shots in the game.

Eastern

  • Zacharie Appolon, Brycen Kennedy, Tim Lichack, Quinn O'Connor, and Cedrick Rene all scored in the loss.
  • Appolon, O'Connor, and Shane Haggerty all had assists.
  • Ryan Stocks led the Warriors with four ground balls.
  • Five different players caused turnovers in the game.
  • Eastern picked up 23 ground balls, were successful on 23 of 32 clear attempts, won eight of 24 faceoffs, scored one power play goal on three attempts, and took a total of 25 shots in the game.

How It Happened

The Warriors scored first just under two minutes into the game on Lichak's goal. Maritime went on to tie the game and take the lead with goals from Coolahan, Lamattina and Donovan. Eastern broke up the party with a goal from Rene at 4:29. The Bucs closed out the quarter with two goals in the final 1:07 from Coolahan at 1:07 and Walker, from Maida, at six seconds. The Bucs led 5-2 after one.

In the second, the Bucs started off with two goals, one at 10:14 from Maida, the second nine seconds later off the draw from Lawson. Eastern scored with 4:32 on the clock on a power play from Kennedy to make it 7-3. With 2:18 left in the first half, Kosiewicz scored his own power play goal on an assist from Lamattina. The Bucs led 8-3 at the half.

Eastern opened the second half with a goal from Appolon at 11:47. The Bucs would control the remainder of the third with four goals in the final 9:53. One from Coolahan, two from Lamattina and the last of the quarter from Raei. Maritime opened their lead to 12-4.

In the fourth, Lamattina scored his final goal of the night at 12:49 from Iversen. O'Connor scored the Warriors final goal of the game at 8:43. The Bucs scored two more goals in the final 6:20, both on man up opportunities. Both of the goals came from Jones to close out the 15-5 playoff win over the Warriors.

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers travel to UMass Boston on Thursday to take on the top seeded Beacons. Game time is currently set for 1:30pm and is subject to change.
