Men's Lacrosse Doubles up Mariners to win Admiral's Cup

CASTINE, MAINE -- Sunday afternoon, the Buccaneers traveled to Maine to take on Maine Maritime in the 2022 edition of the Admiral's Cup. Coming off of a last minute loss on Wednesday against Norwich in the snow and looking for their first win of the season, the Bucs went on to double up their counterparts to the north 14-7.

In The Field

Mass. Maritime

  • Mitchell Maida led the game in goals and assists with five and four respectively. 
  • Captain Spencer Jones scored four goals and added an assist.
  • Peter RaeiGage CoolahanNick LamattinaDale Donovan and Ryan Cameron each scored a goal in the win.
  • Lamattina added two assists with Coolahan, Cameron, Jones, Captain Patrick Lawson, and Braeden Kosiewicz each had an assist in the game.
  • Faceoff man Brian Rosher led the Bucs with eight ground balls and won 50% of his faceoffs. The Buccaneers racked up 36 ground balls on the day.
  • They also caused 15 turnovers with James Cassidy leading the way with three.
  • The Bucs converted 18 of 24 clears, won 12 of 24 faceoffs and scored five man-up goals on 12 opportunities while taking 49 shots on offense.

Maine Maritime

  • Zeke Tocci led the Mariners with two goals. Five other players scored in the loss.
  • Jayden Wilson, who also scored, tallied two of the team's six assists in the game.
  • Ian Haines led the game with nine bround balls and faceoff man Jed Astbury picked up seven of his own while winning 50% of his faceoffs taken.
  • Haines also led the Mariners in caused turnovers with three of the team's 11.
  • Maine picked up 37 ground balls, were successful on 19 of 32 clears, won 12 of 24 faceoffs and scored once on a man up opportunity of their seven in the game. The hosts took 33 shots overall.

How It Happened

The Buccaneers scored early and often in the first men's lacrosse Admiral's Cup since 2019, scoring four unanswered in the first quarter. Maida was responsible for two goals with Cameron and Jones also scoring to give the Bucs a 4-0 lead after 15 minutes. 

Maine opened the second quarter by getting on the board on Tocci's first of the game. The Buccaneers went on to score six unanswered, three on man-up opportunities, to take a 10-1 lead with 58 seconds left in the first half. Maine closed out the first 30 minutes of play with an Owen Hansen goal with 14 seconds left to send the game to overtime with a 10-2 score.

Main controlled the third quarter scoring two of the three goals in the quarter, the least action in any of the four quarters. Tocci scored his second, Jacob Belanger scored one. Jones scored his fourth with one minute left in the third. It was his four of the day, all four of which came on man-up opportunities. The Bucs held an 11-4 lead after three.

The teams split the scoring evenly in the fourth with each side scoring three times. The Bucs scored all three of theirs in the first five minutes of the quarter to take a 14-4 lead with 10:31 remaining. The Mariners went on to score three in the final 6:24 of the game to cut the Buccaneer lead in half. The Bucs held on to take a big Admiral's Cup win, 14-7, over Maine.

The Bucs travel to Nashua, N.H. on Wednesday to face off against Rivier in non-conference action beginning at 7pm.
