Men's Lacrosse: Bucs Lose on the Road to West Conn in Conference

DANBURY, CT -- Men's Lacrosse traveled to Western Connecticut on Saturday to take on a very good West Conn team in Little East Play. Coming off back-to-back wins in conference, the Bucs fell to their hosts 18-7.

In The Field

Maritime

  • Spencer Jones and Mitchell Maida each scored three goals.
  • Nick Lamattina scored one goal in the loss.
  • Ryan Cameron tallied the only assist in the game.
  • Brian Rosher picked up a team-high eight ground balls. Lally picked up six of his own.
  • Lally led both teams with four caused turnovers.
  • Maritime picked up 29 ground balls, completed 21 of 24 clears, won 11 of 28 faceoffs, failed to score on four power plays, and took 48 total shots in the game.

West Conn

  • Julian Duque scored six goals to lead all players. 
  • Benjamin Hawthorne scored four times. 
  • Trey Aronow scored three times.
  • Aronow assisted on six goals, Hawthrone added three helpers in the win.
  • Jonathan Russack-Baker picked up 13 ground balls to lead the game.
  • Chris Comizio caused three turnovers for West Conn.
  • West Conn picked up 40 ground balls, were successful on 28 of 34 clears, won 17 of 28 faceoffs, scored three power play goals, and took 38 shots in the game.

How It Happened

West Conn scored the first goal 2.5 minutes into the game. Maritime tied the game a minute later on a Maida goal. West Conn went on to score three unassisted to take a 4-1 lead. In the final two minutes, the Bucs scored one, from Lamattina, West Conn scored two in the last 65 seconds from Hawthorne and Duque. West Conn led 6-2 after one.

In the second West Conn extended their unanswered run to five goals, scoring the first three goals of the quarter in the first five minutes. Down 9-2, Maritime scored three of their own unanswered, all from Jones, to cut the deficit to four goals, 9-5. With three seconds left before the break, West Conn grabbed their 10th goal and went to the half up 10-5.

Four goals were scored in the third, all by West Conn. After 45 minutes of play, West Conn led Maritime 14-5.

Maritime opened the fourth with a Maida goal 87 second in. West Conn got the goal back on a power play at 10:42 to make it 15-6. The Buccaneers scored again with 6:10 left. With the score 15-7, West Conn proceeded to score three goals, each a minute apart from each other to take an 18-7 lead, which would prove to be the final.

 

What's Next

Maritime hosts Salem State in conference play on Tuesday at Clean Harbors Stadium at 7pm for what will be senior night for the Buccaneers.
