Men's Lacrosse: Buccaneers Lose Inaugural LEC game to Owls

BUZZARDS BAY, MA -- On Saturday afternoon, Buccaneers men's lacrosse hosted the Keene State Owls in conference play. The game marked the first game ever for the Bucs in the Little East Conference. Maritime played well against a tough Owls squad though they ended up falling 16-9.

In The Field

Maritime

  • Mitchell Maida led the Bucs and was tied for the game-high with four goals. 
  • Dale Donovan and Ryan Cameron each scored twice.
  • Braeden Kosiewicz rounded out the scoring with one goal.
  • Jack Iversen tallied three assists, tied for the game-high in the category.
  • Cameron assisted on two goals. Maida, Leo AllgaierNick Lamattina each had one assist.
  • Steve McBrine had his best game in the faceoff circle, winning 13 of 24 faceoffs. 
  • McBrine and Kosiewics led Maritime with four ground balls each. 
  • Allgaier led the team in caused turnovers with three.
  • The Bucs picked up 27 ground balls, were successful on 19 of 30 clears, won 13 of 29 faceoffs, and took a total of 33 shots. 

Keene State

  • Cooper Cioffi scored four goals for the Owls. Rex Maccarini, and Nathan Sickles each scored three.
  • Joe Nutting and Giacomo Tendone scored two goals each in the win.
  • Shane Molloy and Colby Quiet each scored once.
  • Quiet and Ben Wright tallied three assists each. Sickles and Nutting had two assists each. Four other players recorded assists for the Owls.
  • Quiet led Keene in the faceoff circle with 12 wins in 22 attempts. He also led all players with 11 ground balls.
  • Cioffi added nine ground balls for the guests.
  • Molloy caused six turnovers to lead all players in the game.
  • The Owls picked up 53 ground balls, were successful on 17 of 21 clears, won 16 of 29 faceoffs and took 40 total shots.

How It Happened

The perennially successful in the Little East Conference Keene State Owls came out firing against the Bucs to open the first conference game of the season for both squads scoring four unanswered goals in the first quarter over an eight minute span. The Buccaneers broke up the Owls party with 25 second left in the first with Maida making it 4-1. Directly off the faceoff after the Bucs goal, Keene went on to score their fifth of the quarter from the stick of Quiet to take a 5-1 lead at the end of the first.

In the second, the teams scored a combined 11 goals. The Owls scored the first two to extend their lead to 7-1. Maida, with his team a man up, added his second of the game to make it 7-2. Tedone and Nutting followed the Maritime goal up with a goal each. With 9:48 left in the first half, Keene led the Bucs 9-2. Over the next two minutes, the Buccaneers picked up steam scoring three goals to pull within four, 9-5. In the final seven minutes of the second, the Owls scored three of their own unanswered to take a 12-5 lead that took the teams to the halftime break.

In the third there were only two goals scored, one by each team. Cioffi scored a man up to extend the guest's unanswered run to four goals giving them a 13-5 lead. Cameron scored the lone goal for the Bucs in the quarter on an assist from Allgaier to cut the deficit to seven goals, 13-6. 

In the final quarter of regulation each team scored three goals and alternated scoring them. Keene scored first to go up 14-6. Donovon scored the first and last goals of the quarter for the hosts with one at 9:54, the second at the one minute mark. The Bucs couldn't cut the lead any further and fell in their first LEC game, 16-9, to the Owls.

The Buccaneers are on the road for their next game on Saturday, April 2nd when they take on Southern Maine in conference play at 3pm.
