Men's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener to Lyons on the Road

NORTON, MA -- Buccaneer men's lacrosse opened their 2022 campaign on Wednesday night with a trip to Norton to take on Wheaton, a former NEWMAC foe of the Bucs. In the first meeting between the teams since 2019, the Lyons were victorious, 15-4.

Maritime

  • Senior captain Spencer Jones scored his first goal of the season on his only shot of the game.
  • Mitchell Maida, after leading the Bucs in goals last year, also scored his first goal of the season.
  • Jack Iversen and Ryan Cameron each scored goals for Maritime in the loss. 
  • Maida tallied two assists in the game.
  • The Bucs picked up 33 ground balls as a team and Brian Rosher led the team with seven.
  • Defensively, Maritime caused eight turnovers. Evan Doig and James Cassidy were each credited with two.
  • The Buccaneers won 16 of 23 faceoffs in the game and were successful on 11 of 19 clear attempts.

Wheaton

  • Two players scored three goals to lead all players in the game. 
  • Robert Sullivan and Ben Stomberg both scored twice in the win.
  • Five other players scored in the game for the Lyons.
  • Eight assists were credited in the game with Mainella, Stomberg, and Max Cooper tallying two each.
  • The Lyons picked up 44 ground balls in the game and were led by Alex Berg with four.
  • Defensively, Wheaton caused 13 turnovers. Jacob Wharton led all players with three.
  • Wheaton won just seven of 23 faceoffs and were successful on all 23 of their clear attempts.
  • The Lyons committed 10 penalties for a total of 7:30 of penalty minutes.

How It Happened

Wheaton scored all 10 of the game's goals in the first half as they were able to keep Maritime off the board in the first 30 minutes. In the first quarter, the Lyons scored twice and led 2-0 after one. In the second, they scored eight times, including three man-up goals, to take a 10-0 lead into the halftime break. 

In the third quarter, Jones broke through for the Bucs, scoring on a pass from Maida to make it 10-1 Lyons. Wheaton would go on to score two minutes later and again later in the quarter on a man-up opportunity to take a 12-1 lead into the final 15 minutes of play.

In the fourth, Wheaton scored first. The Bucs then rattled off two goals in a row following penalties by Wheaton. Iversen and Cameron scored to make it 13-3 with nine minutes left in regulation. In the final 5:30 of the game three balls found the back of the net with Wheaton scoring twice and the Bucs getting one from Maida, unassisted, with just under five minutes remaining.

When all was said and done, Wheaton took the win on their home turf, 15-4, over the Bucs.

The Buccaneers will host Curry College on Saturday, March 5th at 11am at Clean Harbors Stadium in their home opener.
