Men's Lacrosse: Bucs Blinded by Beacons in Conference Play

BUZZARDS BAY, MA -- Maritime hosted UMass Boston in Little East Conference play on Saturday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium. The top team in the conference, the Beacons beat the Bucs 20-9.

Maritime

  • Spencer Jones led all Bucs with three goals. 
  • Dale Donovan scored twice in the loss.
  • Mitchell MaidaJack IversenNick Lamattina, and James Cassidy each netted one goal.
  • Maida tallied three assists in the game. Doug Walker added one assist.
  • Maida and Brian Rosher picked up a team-high five ground balls. 
  • Maida led the Bucs defensively with three caused turnovers.
  • Maritime picked up 43 ground balls, were successful on 23 of 24 clears, won 14 of 33 faceoffs, scored on one of five man-up opportunities and took a total of 46 shots in the game.

UMass Boston

  • Gavin Admirand scored a game-high seven goals for the Beacons.
  • Jacob Banks and Darragh Fahey each scored three times.
  • Charlie Chapman scored twice.
  • five other Beacons tallied one goal.
  • Michael Claflin assisted on three goals in the win. Admirand added two helpers.
  • Faceoff man Jack Dobrzynski picked up a game-high six ground balls.
  • Chris Palin and Patrick Carey each caused two turnovers for Boston.
  • UMass picked up 45 ground balls, were successful on 29 of 34 clears, won 19 of 33 faceoffs, scored on three of five man up opportunities, and took 40 total shots in the game.

How It Happened

Maritime scored the first goal of the game a minute and a half into the first from the stick of Jones on a pass from Maida. Boston went on to score four unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead with five minutes left in the quarter. The Buccaneers grabbed hte momentum back scoring three unanswered of their own to tie the game at 4-4 with 1:33 left in the first. 30 second later, Admirand scored to give his team a 5-4 lead that the Beacons took into the second.

The Beacons controlled the second quarter scoring all seven of the goals in the quarter. The first came 22 seconds in from Banks, the last was seven second before half time from Admirand. On an eight-goal run, the Beacons had a 12-4 advantage at the half.

The Bucs scored the first goal of the third, from Iversen five minutes in, to make it 12-5. Boston proceeded to go on another four-goal unanswered run to run the score to 16-5 with 5:42 left in the quarter. Donovan scored, from Maida, with 2:39 left to cut the deficit to 10 goals. Admirand ended the scoring in the quarter again, scoring with 2:02 left to give his team an 11-goal, 17-6, lead going into the fourth.

Each team scored three goals in the fourth, the first from Banks 50 seconds in. With the score 20-7, the Bucs scored the final two goals of the game with 3:46 on the clock then with 50 seconds left in the game from Donovan and Jones. The Beacons captured their league leading third win of the season in conference while the Bucs fell to 1-2 in LEC play.

The Buccaneers have a week off before their next game which is on the road at Plymouth State in LEC play on Saturday, April 16th at 4pm.
