BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Charleen Klangos (Lowell, Mass.) notched 25 kills and 18 digs to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a sweep of a non-league college volleyball doubleheader from Pine Manor by scores of 3-0 in the opener and 3-1 in the nightcap in matches played Saturday afternoon at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center.

 

Klangos collected 14 kills and nine digs in the host Buccaneers’ (3-15) opening 25-22, 25-18, 25-15 triumph, as fellow senior Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.) chipped in with seven kills and three digs in the opener.  Freshman Marie Harrison (Weymouth, Mass.) added 11 digs and six kills for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received 21 set assists and 10 digs from senior Emma Ethier (Norton, Mass.) to go with a combined 19 digs and six set assists from freshmen Michelle Sheehan (Attleboro, Mass.) and Christina Ruggeri (Bourne, Mass.).

 

Freshman Keisha Hadorn (Yokosuka, Japan) recorded seven kills and three digs in the opening setback for the visiting Gators (2-13), who also received seven digs and five kills from freshman Kendra Williams (San Diego, Calif.) as well as eight digs and four kills from freshman Viyanni Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.).  Junior Ashley Whiteshield (Seward, Ak.) chipped in with 17 set assists, five digs and a pair of service aces for Pine Manor, which also received 17 digs from freshman Alexa Leon (El Centro, Calif.).

 

Klangos paced the Buccaneers in the nightcap with 11 kills and nine digs, as the hosts took a 25-15 opening set decision before the visitors grabbed 25-19 second set win.  Massachusetts Maritime claimed respective 25-20 and 25-15 triumphs in the final two sets to complete the sweep, as Harrison recorded a double-double effort of 11 kills and 12 digs in the second match.  Sheehan and Brain combined for nine kills for the Buccaneers, who also received 28 set assists and nine digs from Ethier to go with 26 digs from Ruggeri.

 

Hadorn notched nine kills and five digs in the nightcap setback for Pine Manor, which also received 20 set assists, seven digs and six kills from Whiteshield as well as eight digs, five kills and three service aces from Johnson.  Leon added 25 digs, four set assists and four kills for the Gators, who also collected seven digs from Williams and three kills from freshman Altimisa Cardoso (Boston, Mass.).

 

Massachusetts Maritime and Pine Manor meet again on Wednesday evening in a non-league match in Chestnut Hill, Mass. that begins at 7:00 p.m.
