BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Freshman Courtney McCarthy (Merrimack, N.H.) notched a double-double effort of 13 kills and 10 digs to lead Eastern Nazarene to a 3-0 non-league college volleyball victory over Massachusetts Maritime by game scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-19 in a match played Thursday evening at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center.
Senior Joanna Joseph (Brockton, Mass.) added 13 kills and a pair of solo blocks as well for the visiting Lions (3-3), who also received 14 kills, seven digs and three service aces from junior Kayla Dean (Landsdale, Pa.). Junior Lauryl Berger (Laurel, Del.) collected 33 set assists and 15 digs for Eastern Nazarene, which also received 18 digs from junior Oksana DiCamillo (Eighty-Four, Pa.) in posting its second triumph over the host Buccaneers (1-7) in 12 days.
Sophomore Jennifer Roy (Attleboro, Mass.) notched 10 kills, four digs and three solo blocks in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received 12 digs and four kills from freshman Marie Harrison (Weymouth, Mass.). Senior Charleen Klangos (Lowell, Mass.) added 10 digs and five kills for the Buccaneers, while freshman Michelle Sheehan (Attleboro, Mass.) collected 13 set assists and 15 digs. Senior Emma Ethier (Norton, Mass.) posted 10 digs and five set assists for the hosts, who also received 11 digs from freshman Christina Ruggeri (Bourne, Mass.) and a pair of solo blocks from senior Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.).
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Maine Maritime in opening round play of the Seventh Annual Maritime Classic on Saturday afternoon at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center beginning at 5:30 p.m., while Eastern Nazarene entertains Mount Ida and Westfield State in a non-league tri-match on Saturday afternoon in Quincy, Mass. that begins at 11:00 a.m.
